View Full Version : mini for girl (bad) driver
So my best friend is getting married. His fiance currently drives a 2000 Prelude auto. She is the sweetest girl ever but as a driver she needs work. She has had the prelude wrecked at least three times and keeps driving over/into stuff. She is careless but it helps that my buddy is a mechanic with a full service body shop.
She always wanted a mini since they came out and now my buddy wants to get her one. It'll be automatic and probably the standard (non-S) model.
My question is does it matter what year he goes for? Or should he get the facelifted one ( i believe they started in 05)? Anything to look out for? I hate to see what this car will look like in a year but love is blind i guess.
Any tips would greatly be appreciated.

The later model R50 Coopers are generally better sorted than the early ones. The CVTs on the 2005-2006 Coopers feel a little peppier than my 2004 did.
Love may be blind, but your friend needs to help his fiance become a better driver before she causes serious injury or damage. If they have joint finances and/or insurance policies when they're married, her carelessness behind the wheel WILL affect him, whether it's in the form of higher insurance premiums, big repair bills, or a personal injury lawsuit.

Helpful...
As for the OP
A mini might not be the best car for your friend's gf. If shes that bad a driver, the small size of the mini might make it harder for other people to see and thus avoid her. Its most of the reason my dad refuses to buy my mom a mini.
This, however, could be offset by getting a very bright color..

He should get her driving lessons before anything else.

the standard cooper CVT automatics aren't the greatest. I would either get her a mcs with a normal automatic, or a new cooper with a normal automatic.
that, or get her a 5 speed cooper and have her learn to drive stick.

yeah i shoot for a cheap beater. like a cavalier they are a dime a dozen and you can run the shit out of them and they are still just a pice of shit. and if it breaks jsut buy another one.
for instance of she knocks the fog light out of the front of the mini just in parts that could cost up to 300-350 dollars and expect close to 3 hrs labor! and it doesn't take much to knock one out.
