Anyone having problems with engine malfunctions due to Digital Motor Electronics (DME) failure? My 335 has 4k on it and is dealer replaced unit once already and it has failed again.

I recently purchased a 328i 2007 coupe, 4 months ago. I had problems, the technicians were unable to initialize the adaptations. So, I was told that I need it a new DME. They changed the DME, the performance is a bit better but nothing like the way it was when I first got it!!!!

Symptoms: lag in acceleration, lower torque than before. Obviously the responsiveness of the car is lost!!!! I spoke to the service manager at my dealer where I purchased my car. He told me that he cannot do anything if the check engine light does not appear. He then told me to go get a second opin if I did not like his answer!!! Great BMW dealer!! I will complaint to BMW Canada for his attitude!!!

Spend the money and have it dyno'ed? This is obviously just for your "lower torque" complaint.

This way you have proof of a drop in power hopefully.

I believe to lemon it the car has to be in for the same problem three times within a certain time frame.I,m not positive though.

How did it fail again? What are the symptoms? What made the technicians at BMW change the DME?

For me it was simple. I went in one day for a check engine light! After verifying the problem, they kind of found that it must off needit a new ventillation emission valve. After replacing it, the car was in cruising mode, i.e. hardly any accelation, hardly any torque, and so on! After telling this to the technician (after him doing so many tests on the car) He told that the only thing that can do this to the car is the fact that when the previous technician changed the ventilation valve he had to initialize the adaptations. Once that was done the car was "flying". It was like when I bought it at the beginning! And then, a few weeks after some other problem appeared on the dash, like service car soon, after 8000 km. They got rid of the errors but were unable to clear the adaptations!

the test plans to clear the adaptations do not work, the tech much drive the vehicle for several miles for the adaptations to move. a common failure is caused by the fuel pump for lean mixture for multiplicative and additive values on the n51, and n52(kp) engines. hook up the special tool to the fuel rail and check pressure.

Oh, I forgot to tell you this. Before changing the DME, the technician sent an e-mail to what BMW calls PUMA, they get a hold of all technicians in North America to discuss the problem. Apparently, nobody knows this problem and he was told to change the DME. Obviously something was not done right!!!

your interpretation of PuMA is incorrect. DME's are currently not on the list of parts for tele clearing. if it is a known issue, technical will suggest a solution to the issue, if it is unknown, they will require additional information from the vehicle. PuMA is used as a technical support, in which several people specificlly assigned to a certain BMW group will assist the technican to finding a solution to an issue.
