you weren't kidding when you said go make coffee while it downloads. Hell, I can make coffee, breakfast, lunch and start on dinner. Of course here in Tennessee, we still use the "tin can and string" modem system. A bit slow but we all are gittin' dale-up real soon ya hear? Yep, Dale is goin to climb the pole and tighten that there string and make it go faster.:D

What's up with all the Scandinavians and their obscenely powerful E34's? This must be the third I've seen. That one looks like half of the car was custom-built.
I also like the trailer hitch. With that kind of power, there should be a shot of the car towing a small battleship or something.

I didn't get a chance to watch that until now. That is the greatest E34 I have ever seen. That is a great balance of power. The VS car is just too much IMO. The sound of this car is just sex. Wonder if that could be built for the same price as an alpina? hmmm

I would hardly say this car has "balance of power." It has far too much torque.

I was writing that while watching the vid :) I didn't see the last half until after I typed that. The first dyno pass was nice and the driving seemed just right. The second dyno runs and burn outs were a bit further than I would want or was expecting. But still, I like the torque if you don't stomp it.

Throttle modulation would be very difficult on an engine like that (this is one complaint of turbos in general).
Im sort of bummed to see all of these S38 engines get turbocharged. I dont particularly like the presentation of this one. Wires all over the damn place, no DME box cover, the cam box cover has been totally screwed with, etc.
A link to the build.

man that is insanely badass. i love how the force of the exhaust blew away the collector pipe...thing. jesus.
since that thing was making around 2200ft/lbs, how does that help? i know high HP is good, but i never could understand torque.:dunno

That much torque does not help anything. Merely a bragging right. Im not exactly sure what sort of torque that engine was putting out, but I do not think it was 2200fl/lbs. With that amount of torque, the clutch would cease to exist in a few hundred miles, the driveshaft twist itself into a pretzel, the rear differential would separate from the subframe and the chassis would twist. I doubt the S38 could sustain that sort of torque internally, the long crank of the S38 is strong and can withstand high rpms to about 8000 when it starts to undergo primary resonance, but this is completely different. Nevermind the transmission, what is he using, an Allison tranny from a goddamn Peterbilt? To sustain that torque, there must have been significant drivetrain, chassis, and engine beefing.
A basic primer on torque (how can you understand HP without understanding torque- impossible!):

S38 motors are known to make 1000 - 1300 ft lbs of torque with relative ease - simply low CR built block stock M5 trans and driveline and built axles supposedly hold it well. The VS car had a 2 spd in it, but Andreas car has the stock H pattern. TH400 and such would be ideal.
Torque is the unit that shoves you forward at alarming rates, horsepower is the unit that measures where the car stops accelerating.

2200 ft/lbs is not 1000-1300. Increasing torque by 40% when you already have 1000ft/lbs of unusable torque is going to make that engine have one hell of a short lifespan. The G280/5 is definetly not rated for that sort of torque and it will have a very short lifespan.
Of course, lifespan may not be the goal here.

Once you have past the total friction of the tires all that added torque means nothing and you will little to no accelleration.

I never claimed it was 2200 ft lbs. You don't need to lecture me about transmission strength - VS motors and PPF have had 280/5's last longer than fully forged and cryo'd blocks. The trans is not the issue. What's the difference between a 2JZGTE and a S38B36 once you've built both the only difference is the block casting, which is really not that big a difference. Supra owners run 1200 - 1500hp for long whiles.

i might be crazy, but when i saw the dyno in the video, it started to glow red around 3200 newton meters of torque. naturally, i had to find out how much that was in good ole foot pounds. i did the conversion hnyah...
http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/converter.htm
and it says 3200nm = 2359.88 ft/lbs :eyecrazy
excuse my french....but holy shit
again, im not sure if this is correct, with the whole foot pounds or pound feet confusion that i have.

^^^true thats why i asked how much torque the car has
so basically, torque is needed for the burnout stage and thats it?
angrypancake
01-25-2007, 02:51 AM
torque is when you're on the highway in a turboed car and you're cruising at 4000rpm (Jon's for example, right when he makes full boost) when some ricer douchebag in a tri color prelude with a fart cannon pulls up next to you. the driver floors it and you the passenger are smashed into your seat. that is torgue that causes it.
or when you're cruising in a 540i/6 and you're in 6th and dont have to downshift to accelerate hard. also, torque.

The idea is not to burnout. The burnout means slip and that means going no where. Pre stage burnout is to get the big meats warm and sticky for a good launch.

:lol I think he's catching on now.lol. Builds like this one are for sheer fun and experimentation. If he was building it for real track events, I'm sure he'd lower the A/F mapping and run a quicker spooling dialed in rpm turbo.
That is IF his bearing journals are still nice.:confused
I personally think EVERTHING should be boosted.....NA high hp motors are nice and quick, even sound great....but never as powerful as a spooling engine.
NA motors will never be able to induce enough air to run enough fuel to make their full capacity HP. Even though this IS a "to each his own" Genre'.

the camber of those rear wheels is a bit off, fixing that would def help him out a bit.
With that mutch power, you have to show off.
