Well I did a search and just came up with some old threads that didn't really answer what I'm looking for...

I want to use the Amsoil engine flush to clear up some sludge in the engine. My question- who has done this and what benefits have you gained? Can I still continue to use Mobil 1 after this and not Amsoil? Also, if someone can give me the exact process they took to do the procedure, that would be awesome! Thanks in advance! :)

Look at this site. The guy seams to know what to do.... but the stars in the background diminish any and all legitimacy.:rofl

Yep, used it on three cars (one being my M3) - actually going to do it on my MB E500 this weekend (if I get time). Disclaimer: I'm not part of the Amsoil brainwashing that seems to go on among "dealers" (though I will admit that the brainwashing is at least partly based in technical fact and training IMO) I just use their products, based on my own research and analysis (I have access to SAE journals at work)
and the advice of mechanics that I trust implicitly.

The link in the previous post is the basic procedure, and close enough, however I do it slightly differently based on talking to the Amsoil tech. A couple of notes specific to our cars:

1) the M3 is particularly easy to do the engine flush on because overfilling a quart does not harm it. Amsoil claims, rightly I believe, that by removing the filter and installing a new one, you take a sufficient quantity of old oil out such that when you add the engine flush you aren't really "overfilling" - fact is it doesn't matter on our cars because as you probably know, overfilling a quart or so does not harm our engine (it does harm some engines).
2) The thing I do differently is that I keep the car at 2000rpm for about 10min, rather than idling for 20min as the link above indicates - also the instructions (reinforced by the Amsoil tech I spoke w/) say to occasionally rev it a bit more and vary the revs slightly to move the engine through different operating ranges
3) The stuff stinks (like kerosene) and for the M3 I believe you'll need 1.5 bottles of the flush. It is also hotter than @#^& when you do drain it and the viscosity of the old oil with the engine flush is SO low that it will literally fly everywhere when you drain it - what I do is put newspaper everywhere (including covering the inside of the wheel) then get one of those Tupperware containers they make to put clothes under beds (it is very wide and short), THEN put my standard oil drain catch container in that - you'll get about 75% of the oil in the container and tupperware and 25% will end up on the newspaper, your clothes, in your mouth,.. you get the picture: kinda like when you pull the block plug for draining our coolant.
4) I don't religiously use the Amsoil filters - the Mann and Mahle are good enough - if you have to buy the flush, might was well pick up an Amsoil filter but like I said, I have used the standard filters, they are quite good even at small particulates.

Good luck - post any other questions, I'll opine.

Read up here about engine flushes, Auto-rx is the most popular, but Amsoil is mentioned too.

The same can be done with Seafoam... put a pint into your engine about 100 miles before changing the oil.

I've also used a big ol' machine at some dealerships that claims to do all kinds of wonderful stuff to your engines life... never noticed anything good or bad after paying teh $125'ish cost...

An old trick apparently was using some ATF and letting it run through before draining. Maybe this stuff is primarily that?

I did this over the weekend and changed the oil with Amsoil Euro 5w40 synthetic. The VANOS clatter/whine after revving the engine is gone. The lifters don't tick as much as before (82k miles).

The oil was black and very thin as mentioned above. This is the first engine flush I've tried in 4 years of ownership. The car seems to pull a bit harder. Probably my imagination though.

Is this the first time you've run the euro 5w-40? What did you run before?

I was using the same Amsoil before. The engine was not this quiet.
