Haha, before I read your last line, I was going to ask if proceeds from this sale were going to be used to fund an E30 M3...hell of a nice looking M5 btw.

Sweet ride. Always wanted one in alpine/black. Not sure you're going to get 18 for it though.

As with everything, its all about the facts, facts facts. What exactly is the condition of this particular E34 M5? What is its history? What care has been imparted upon it? If these are answered in the right way, Id pay up.
I paid $18.6 for a 120K mile 1991 Alpine on Schwarz interior. Did I over pay? HELL NO. I got a call that the car was for sale from a long time friend, I called back in 45 minutes and said "deal," got an ASAP ticket to SFO, arrived in SF at 4pm, tendered the cash, received title and possession, and embarked on a 20 hour blitz to Denver. I didnt even bother to ask for a PPI. I didnt ask about maintenance records. All I asked was that the owner included the set of original 1995 E34 M5 M-Parallels. I got back home, did a leakdown and compression. Fantastic results, variance was only 5% and the highest loss was almost immeasurable at 4%. A recent leakdown has returned the same numbers. Its all about initial break-in (give it some throttle!) and subsequent care.
If the car has recent PPI and it has good records, then its worth it. Paying more to get a good E34 M5 is the best approach if the car has been cared for. There are a lot of abused E34 M5s and these examples will require a lot of repairs that are not by themselves expensive, but in toto they become costly. That is the achilles heel of the E34 M5 in that minor neglect will become a slippery slope leading to a list of problems.
Asthetically, from the pics, the above car looks good. Mileage is low (though I am a fierce advocate that the S38B36 is a 250k mileage engine and there is no need to be wary of a well-cared for high mileage example). Price is good, but hes gotta be able to sell it. . . .

this guy knows exactly what hes talking about. hence my "high" price. however, after driving it around a few days, ive decided the car is not for sale anymore :devillook unless you want to trade for an E30 M3 in similar condition + money :)

Must say...sweet ride. Just out of curiosity, why would you change your mind if you've already had it awhile?? Ur gonna have a hard time finding a limited edition e30 M3 who is not only willing to give up his/her collectable car, but also willing to swap and give you cash?!?
R U A DEALER?? How many prev. owners? Or is this car really not for sale anymore?

i'm in no hurry to sell it, it's basically the same as putting up a high price and if a sweet deal just happens to roll by, then i'd take it. otherwise, many would consider this car a step UP from an E30 M3, as the E34 M5 is even more rare and exclusive. think the S14 engine + 2 more cylinders and 1.3 liters.
these pictures were taken at a dealership hence the cool license plates that I have left on :)
the car is personally registered and insured to me and has been for more than a year. can you believe this car costs nearly nothing to insure? :redspot
2 previous owners, both from rich areas in california (i forget which ones)

If I were you, I'd just keep it. You know what you've got (a supreme example, I might add), and just smile when you see an e30 M3 roll by!
Not to disagree, BTW, but most would argue that the M3 would be more collectable, because of its racing history and that the best available cars are in "strong" hands. You just don't see many that have not led hard lives still available, whereas, most who bought an M5 would probably have kept it in a garage and used only on weekends. My .02
Bump for a great car! Gotta admit, it looks sharp...and I want it...just have too many toys right now.

Nice point. I have looked at a lot of cars that were decent in price and then you find out that the service isn't what it should have been or it needs work down the road. For example, I bought a 94 325i for $4k with 145K miles. Sounds good right? Well, I put another $1700 into it in a 2 year period keeping/getting it up to snuff. Not so good.
BUT, I recently bought a one owner 89 325is with 90K and in MINT (I don't use the word lightly) condition. The price of admission was $5K.
Now, this is where it gets really hairy...He was asking $3900. Cash on the spot. Had two people coming to look at it the next day (he listed it that day on AutoTrader). After talking with him and my belief in his integrity, I told him that his car was worth much more than his asking and if he would sell it to me, I would give him $5K for it.
Naturally, he agreed and I bought a plane ticket that evening....
He was happy and I am ecstatic. Best $5K I have ever spent.

Ok....:confused What's your point?
If it's that you are brighter, smarter, faster, more clever; Ok, I never said I was the brightest candle on the mantle.
I'm still happy with my purchase. And my point in the thread was that sometimes the lower priced car has a price to be paid after the sale. That's all.
I'm not debating what you wouldn't pay or would pay for this particular car, nor the value of the car.

Is everyone assuming that this is one of those "special" M5s simply because it is overpriced? I see no indiciation that this car will be any better down the road than the average $12k example. No records, vague ownership history, etc. There is no magic "rule" applying to M5s that doesnt apply to any other BMW. Believe me, buy a neglected 7 series or 540i and report back. Some of the best deals I have gotten were high-milers where the high-ticket items have already been done, and the price is low.

agree with that last part, my E36 has 200k on it but everything has been done and so it runs well.
please read my ad more carefully though, if you'd like me to post up pictures of all the records and the previous owners information, i can do that. take a look at similar M5s in similar condition. if you want one like this, you don't really have much choice :)
