I live in Boston, and drive a lot in the city. Boston is the king of potholes. And construction. There are always all kinds of places in the roads to beat up your rims. I do my best, but it is not possible to avoid them all.

As a result, my wheels get beat up. This is the only car I have so I need to drive it all the time, even when potholes are at their worst. I typically have to have one or more wheels straightened every year and I am sick of it.

Any advice on how to avoid denting my rims? Do I have to go to 16" rims?

(I have a 2000 328i with sport package (17" rims) and 225/45-17 tires.)

Im sure you can get tyres that can protect the rim of your alloys. They sidewall rubber sticky out just enough to help protect the rim from getting kerbed. they're not special tyres as such, but more that some tyres have it as a feature.

Dont know how much protection they'll provide but its worth looking into. Also the lower the profile of your tyre the more damge to the rim. Although you've got 45's so i dont think you'll wanna go any thicker than that.
