Ok.
So, I ride a fairly modded motorcycle...and I got the mod bug (formerly known as Moditis, incurable by modern science) really bad on that bike...I changed a lot of stuff and I still have a HUGE list of stuff I want to do, so I understand the mod addiction.
However...I was always under the impression that bimmers were very close to perfect as they were originally designed. I came here after buying my first bimmer and I was *amazed* at all the modding going on here.
I simply can't afford to get the mod bug for my car as well...but I am really interested in learning: Performance wise...why are you guys modding so much?
Is there really that much room for improving the way these cars handle...or is it just a pursuit of creating something truly unique?
Please educate me...I'm here to learn.
Best Regards.
Chris.

Modding is an addiction. Once you have one vehicle that's been modded, you'll always want a modded vehicle.

as the car rolls onto the showroom floor, it is in it's blank state. Yes, it may perform quite well out of the box and look better than every other car on the road, but it is never quite perfect. There are always short cuts made to keep the price down or to try and mix luxury with performance. Even safety cuts into luxury and performance.
That is where the owner comes in. While BMW does have the "individual" program where you can order certain trim bits and such, there is always that need to make the car "yours" to give it that little something that you think it deserves.
If you are into luxury, it might be more leather inside, a better entertainment system, maybe even tinted windows and all the electronic gadgets that the battery can power.
Performance can mean anything from an exhaust system to a full blown engine swap and even beyond... blown M5 engine anybody?
To those that are true enthusiasts, stock is never enough. Stock is like that stuff you buy at the supermarket for soup. The basic ingrediants, it might fill you up, but it will never quite be as tasty as soup that was cooked at home

for me i have an addiction for modding the "looks" of the car...i would mod the performance but unfortunatly i can't in this country as there isn't much professional spots where i can go to and places i can trust..plus..atleast in here..it's VERY expensive to mod a BMW....
but for the looks......i can never stop man...everyday there r new thoughts and i got like that bug that never settles...i have to do stuff to make my car look more unique than it already is....right now i can tell u for sure there r no 2 bmw's in my country that look exactly the same as mine...and wherever i go ppl will know me from my car becuz they know for sure there is no other one like it....so basically i think ppl mod their cars seeking uniqness....and the most important reason...the feeling u get after u mod a car...and u just stand there and look at it...it's just...sex-like feeling ...
just my thoughts on this :P

I like a car that is overbuilt for the street persay in terms of handling, braking, balance, etc. I don't really care about looks...stock is fine, sometimes a few little things here and there.
So far I've restored my suspension and put in a custom setup that has made it very firm and tight, I like it a lot. Then wheels/tires next for massive grip for my little car.
Down the line an M3 engine swap for more power...then that will be the best that I can do with the 318ti platform...Ideally I want a Porsche 997 GT3, a little ways off though haha.
Plus BMW has to tune the car for basic drivers and the public, so that means tons of understeer, soft spring rates and well the list goes on. That's fine for a daily driver but the plus side is that BMW focuses heavily on making a very strong engines and well thought out suspensions that can be built upon right off the showroom floor. You wouldn't go do that with a lot of other brands.
It varies from person to person on this board, I strongly believe in the "Ultimate Driving Machine," while others may focus on other things like visuals, etc. But yes, there is a lot of improvement to be had from stock, we have an `02 325iT with the sport package and other goodies, fine driving car but if it was mine the suspension would be immediately tossed for something more aggressive. And then so on.
Modding is an addiction. Once you have one vehicle that's been modded, you'll always want a modded vehicle.
