View Full Version : exhaust vs. diffuser ordeal

I've got an m-replica rear diffuser laying around painted waiting for me to put it on but my lazy azz hasn't gotten to it yet. The real problem is that my 1.8L flows out a single tailpipe while the diffuser was molded for the twin tailpipes. I was wondering if anyone knows a simple muffler exchange that would help to resolve that "extra space" issue. be specific please included est. prices... i've tried several tips but my tailpipe needs to be centered to make the split tips able to fit - right now its off to the side. I don't feel like buying a whole exhaust kit for 600-900$ either so the cheapest/not trashiest response to this problem will be rewarded with 1000 rock-out smilies (:buttrock)... thanks.

how bad do you think this will change the sound of my car... nonetheless anyone think its gonna even sound good/worse. I don't think magnaflow is gonna produce any good sounds from a bmw (my favorite is the uuc by far). I like how my intake sounds right now and I wonder how this will affect the overal sound of my car...

as for the magnaflow, i did a similar exhaust "mod" to my 328i except with a borla muffler. just a simple cut and weld job. i was afraid of how the sound would come out but i couldnt have been more satisfied with the results. its not LOUD but its not exactly quiet. i can still sneak around if i had to. as far as changing the sound, all it will do is be a lil deeper, thas all. just my .02

actually, magnaflow's sound pretty decent on bmw's. do some searches on the forums, a few people have magnaflows on their rides. as for me, i have an edge motorworks exhaust system quiet version (which uses a magnaflow muffler) + cosmos cai. the exhaust sounds low and deep at low rpms, and sounds awesome in higher rpm's together with my cai. i actually like the exhaust alot. i youtube'd "e36 magnaflow" and this is what i got: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfT6qK8l_8g. anyhow, good luck with your situation!

I couldn't find any borlas with dual tips so i think i'll just go ahead and go with the magnaflow muffler

This should fill that gap nicely and should be an easy retrofit with some welding (anyone know if the stock inlets for the e36 are 2.25"?). I'll order it next week and let you know how it turns out. I'll get a clip added too, I'm sure I'm not the only stock single tailpiper who had this problem. Thanks guys for all the help and I hope this adjustments works out well.

just got the muffler installed today. loud as hell but will break in nicely. i went with the model number 14816 (dual double wall 3.5") and then added some nice 2.5" piping all the way back.

= heres the cold start and then a quick run... you can hear my loose car parts rattling (loose change inside, trunk, etc.) so dont be detered by that...

hey OP... in the vid, when you're driving, there's one light one in the dash, then as you redline it, another one comes on as soon as you shift... what is that light ?
nice sound btw

That sounds amazing indeed! Where did you end up finding that muffler? ebay?
Also how do you get around going from the dual pipes to the single inlet? do they make any that are two inlet mufflers?

That was his ASC light, or as I call it, the "oh, S**T!" light. When that comes on, you better hang on to something! Sounds good! Too bad it's an auto though;)

the first or the 2nd... the ASC light comes on for a split second, and flashes if you're still slipping tires... that light stayed on for a while... and i know he wasn't burning out for like 3-4 secs in a 318 :stickoutt
seriously though, i'm curious about the lights

No, it was his ASC light, trust me. He reached down with his index finger while his hand was resting on the gear selector and switched it off after he shifted. I do it all the time, except for me, it's when my hand is resting on the stick while I'm waiting in 1st gear.
Edit: It wasn't flashing at all, he never slipped out the tires.

haha yea guys, it was my asc. my actuautor is fried so it its been fucking up my throttle bottle for a while. its like a 300$ replacement but im gonna grab a boot from a non-asc e36 so no worries. i picked up the muffler for 130$ from a shop where the guys that work there are really chill, its originally like $250 or something. i should take away my car list though so people dont know its a 318... theyll think im crazy or something... haha not really. but anyways, this system is LOUD. but the more i drive it, the more im getting real use to it.
