While the engine was running I pulled out the ignition key out of the
ignition switch. I could not turn off the engine.
When I insert the key, the switch doe not turn.It is stock on the running
position.
How can I fix this.
I need the help. I have a 1996 328i BMW.

Well, first off, pull the fuse for the fuel pump to shut the car off. Unfortunately, your ignition switch has gone completely bad. Same thing happened to me. The key pulled right out, and the car kept running. After you get the car shut off, you'll probably have to disconnect the battery, since the switch is stuck in the on postion. Otherwise, all your electronics will stay on and kill the battery. If you have the time to DIY, you can install a new switch in as little as an hour. Don't take your car to the dealership; they wanted something like $850 to fix mine.

Thanks. this realy helps.
The cylinder does barely rotate forward but not back to the off position.
Do I have to replace the cylinder lock only?

I believe the switch and tumbler have to be replaced. I was gonna do it myself, but had a family friend who co-owns a BMW shop do it. I kind of wish I would have done it myself though. It would have given me the opportunity to wrench on the car on my own. He said it can be done in as little as an hour. Let me do a little research on it and try and get you some info.

Actually, it appears you may only need a new tumbler.

The broken plastic tab thing they are talking about is what causes the problems you and I have had.
