Sure could be. BMWs need a good 12V to get the car to crank and fire. You might have something left on like a glove box light or a door slightly open that drained the battery..

Did you hear a clicking from the starter when you turned the key?

what kind of clicking noise, and this might be of some significance, I cleaned the battery last week due to some corrosion on the positive terminal. It looks somewhat rusted now so I cannot get the battery out. would water on the battery drain it at all?

I think a very important question as of right now is, are you getting fuel/spark? I had a problem like this a few days ago, but anywho, when you get into your car, turn the key to the on position (2nd click) and tell me if you can hear the fuel pump getting energy. And if you can check for spark by pulling out one of the plugs and hold it close to something that conducts electricity, and crank the car to see if you get any spark.
I'm not a mechanic or anything, but I think fuel, spark, and air are the three components required to get a vehicle running. Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

It'll come from the backseat, it's a very distinct sound, you really can't miss it. Kind of like a guhlunk guhlunk sound.. sorta
