its called cosmeline. (i think thats spelled right) its to prevent salt and rust from getting on the cars when they ship them over seas or long distances.

You're thinking of the yellow colored grease that is applied to the cars for shipment. I believe the original poster is referring to the black rubberized textured coating on the underside of his car. You can purchase this in aerosol cans at nearly any automotive parts store; although it's not quite as good as what is applied during manufacturing.

Nothing is as good as what the factory applies before painting of the underbody...

I think it's oem. I don't think anyone in Texas would be concerned about salt to add such a coating him or herself.

Yes, the “black rubberized textured coating” is what I am referring to. I had to take some off when I removed the quarter panels. It looks like it forms a seal at these junctions and I thought I would add some when reinstalling.

What do you mean before painting? This stuff is definitely over the paint.

no, it isn't. he's talking about the rubberized undercoating to prevent rust and other nasty things getting in. it's hard. cosmoline is basically a clearish grease that is used to encase entire objects, such as guns, to prevent rust from forming. You gotta clean the entire thing off. If there WERE cosmoline under the car, it would be like having petroleum jelly there. you can imagine what kind of contaminants it would pick up and stick to it.

BMW doesn't hose thier cars with black rubberized undercoating over the paint. A previous owner or someone else did that to your car.

There is no black rubberized undercoating sprayed over the paint on my car.. just the factory undercoat.. and nice titansilber paint.

cosmoline is that amber colored crap that is found on them motor and other imporant parts like that.

Our cars in certain places do have a rubber like coating even before the undercoating is put on. generally around potential openings into the cab or where rust could form, which are usually welds or small holes. There is a good amount of the crap around my spare wheel well.
