Today I purchased a 1989 535i that reads 300,000 miles. The only problem is that the odometer is stuck there. The trip odometer still works. The car could have a lot more miles, but I doubt it. Is there any type of fix for this problem, or is this something I will have to live with?

Do the rest of the gauges work correctly? I must admit, that is a very odd problem. There are a couple of people with more than 300k miles, so it isn't as though the ODO won't read any higher.

It is a problem on some older e32's and e34's. Here is a link for some good info on the subject and what you can do about it:

Look under "FIXES" > "ELECTRONICS" > "299 960km".

I have over 300K on my 1990 E34 and my odometer still functions properly. Seems like you must have a glitch with yours? You may have to get a new/used gauge cluster or have and VDO specialist repair it? Good Luck..
