For those that are thinking of getting an automatic, GM's 6spd in the 328xi Coupe is outstanding. Driving it today, I was thoroughly impressed at how quickly it downshifts and upshits in steptronic mode. You barely feel the downshifts and they are very fast. These transmissions are quickly changing the way I look at the manual option. Having a six speed manual in one of my other cars has always been fun, but it does get kind of tiring in the city. Anyway, hats off to GM.

The ZF in the 335 is even better.

I agree with PeterC4 on the auto tranny in the new BMWs. Going into the buying experience, I was sure I wanted a manual. After driving both, the auto won me over. This is truly the first time I have ever been that impressed with an automatic transmission.
The long and short of it is that BMW has an excellent transmission whether you want an auto or manual. My hat is off to GM for developing the new 6 speed auto!

I'm not too certain about the GM 6AT in the 335i, but I'm assuming its actually the transmission that Ford and GM recently made a joint venture to design and use together..

The 335 has the ZF 6 HP TU19 AT, not a GM. The 328 has a GM AT that is made in France. I don't know if that is the one you're referring to.

Okay yeah maybe it is.. I admit I dont follow BMW trannys very well..except for the one time where we ordered a new ZF tranny and a GM one was sent that was totally different lol

Until this year all NA 3-series had similar engines and the same transmissions. Now both the engine and transmissions are totally different between the 328 and 335.

Im running the same AT in the Corvette. Excellent tranny.

Its is surprisingly smooth. Even on the downshift. Does it behave in the Corvette the same way? That's a lot of horsepower its handling, so no doubt its modified a little.

The shifting pattern is about the same but like you said, the bump in HP in the Corvette gives one a SLIGHTLY different feeling! LOL. Good morning Peter!!

My '95 325i had a GM AT built in France. That thing crapped out at 154k. Just so ya'll would have a "decade down the road" view of things.
