View Full Version : I ruined somebody's Christmas

So, I am driving into Philadelphia from jersey today.. heading through Camden towards the Ben Franklin Bridge. In front of me is a mini cooper I am following when suddenly he brakes hard, so I do the same, the anti-locks make a racket when that happens. Around his car this beagel puppy runs around the side between it and the centre divider and around behind him. I am sandwiched between the divider and a minivan, so all I can do is continue to give the anti-locks on my Bimmer a workout.
With a sickening crunch that ripped the plastic of my bumper, I hit this poor pop right at the passengerside foglight. I felt the front wheel rise up over the dog and then back down as I came to halt.. with the rear wheel sitting onto of it. Poor pup made a real sickening crunch as I pulled forward off of it. Poor thing had a collar and everything, so it probably got loose. I was sick from having done this, I just feel so sorry for the person or family who owned this dog. Another ten feet and I wouldn't have have even touched it.
Now I need to clean my car and replace the front bumper. I almost lost the lower grill compleatly and I did loose the wiring to that fog, it was hanging loose under the car.
Not a good way to start a christmas vacation

It's sad, but this is what happens when pets run free. Unfortunatley dogs and cats tend not to have a good sense of the road.

you need to reread my post.. and know the area I was in. I was on a highway, heading into the city. So I was not speeding and I was just following a mini. I was only able to stop long enough to check that the pup was dead (it was) and that my car was not dragging anything that would cause it to be a danger..
Also, if you re-read. I did mention that I was sick about it. the car can be repaired, that poor beagal can't

You're out of line.
The OP did not mention speeding or trying to get a look at the mini cooper. He accidentally hit a dog that ran out in front and felt bad about it. No need to make him feel worse for an ACCIDENT.

I do not like killing anything above a bug (I do eat meat, but I could not kill it to eat it) and this has been bothering me. I keep wondering what I could have done to have avoided this.
I was almost nausious after killing the poor pup. I think if it had been a fully grown dog, I probably would have just punted him with the bumper instead of running him over. If I had been driving my old car (a 1999 Hyundai tiburon) I probably would have scooped him up off of the road and over the hood. That car sat lower, the whole car was more wedge shaped than my E36, and it dove quite a bit under heavy braking.

That sucks man. I know the feeling. Not to long ago I ran over a cat. It darted out infront of me so fast I didn't even have time to react. It's like everything goes into slow motion, you can feel the car just crushing it. It's is the most sickening feeling ever. I felt really bad for a week or so after that. I couldn't drive down the street it happened on because I just felt horrible everytime I passed there.
It sucks, but what are you gonna do? There is not much you can do. Just realize that it probably didn't suffer because it was so instant. The owner will just need to learn to keep their pet inside or fenced in next time.

Over-reaction. He didnt brag about it or whine about what happened to his car. It happened. Re-read the original post. He wasn't speeding, nor did he "flee" the scene. Could have happened to anyone.

I'm sure you were just in an emotional mood when you made your post... nobody could possibly flip out on someone about an accident like that.
Don't worry about shouldering the guilt - any car could have hit that dog. It doesn't make it any better, but because of the carefree nature of pets, they tend to get themselves into trouble. Nobody expects you to change or accept responsibility for something like that. Try to enjoy your holiday, there's no reason you shouldn't feel allowed to. :)

Don't sweat it. It's not your fault. It's the owner's fault for having the dog out. It could have caused a serious accident that day and a person could have died. If you feel that bad about it, cover the damages to your car yourself rather than making the careless owners foot the bill. That's being generous.

Find the owner and ask them to pay for the damages to your car.

I'd kill it if I had to eat, wouldn't have any problems shooting a deer or something (though I haven't yet). Anyway...
Be happy that it was killed fairly quickly rather than having one of your above scenarios happen. Getting hit by a car even at a slow speed like that can still cause some massive injuries. Would you rather deal with a beagle that died quickly, or with a dog that has 1-4 broken legs, broken ribs, head injury, and god knows what else, and might just have to be put down in the end?
I know how you feel, man. I've been damn lucky to not have hit anyone's pet or other animals. In 10 years of driving, the only thing I've run over is one chipmunk, and I felt miserable the rest of the day when I did that. Laugh, but it's true.

And then the cops would come cuff you because you assaulted someone.
In many areas there are leash laws. In most cases the owner is fully liable for any property damage thier pet causes... be it ripping up the neighbors rose beds, or getting anihilated on the highway causing a 28 car pile up and 17 fatalities.
Pets belong in the house, or confined to the owners property. They do not belong on the roadway. The owner of the animal is absolutely responsible for the damages to the OP'ers vehicle, and I would not hesitate to give the owner a bill, and if they scoff at it... call the cops.

I don't disagree with you on it being the law, It's just a low down move and I personally would never do that to anyone. I have more character than that.

I am not worried about the car. I already have that M3 bumper cover I bought from the group buy this summer. I am glad I never had the time to get it painted and installed... guess now I have an excuse.
As for making the owner pay. My parents used to have an AKC registered Kennel. We raised Siberian Huskies. Great dogs, but unless you exercise them daily, they love to get out and roam. We used to joke that when they got out we would have to go to chicago to catch them (I live in NJ) so I understand that no matter how hard you try and keep a dog in your house or on your property, it is eventually going to get out. That is just the way it is.
I guess the real reason I feel guilty is the fact I hesitated a bit when I hit the brakes. I did not see why the mini hit his brakes, and I had a moment to wonder why he hit them when the road was clear ahead. I do not tail gate and I was leaving more than enough room between me and the Mini for a safety cushion, you just never consider that what I was going to hit would be an animal that was coming towards me as I hit the brakes. Like I said, 10 feet and it would not have made a difference, I would not have touched the poor dog.
I am only really thankful that it was an animal and not a kid.

well, it looks like I really have to get off of my arse now and get the M3 bumper I got in the group buy painted. Right now mine is held together with a broomstick that I laid across the inside bottom and put sheetrock screws through from underneath the bumper.
