Hello All-

Need some help... Interested in the purchase of a 335I but would like to know what everyone is paying. In the Southern California area the dealerships are offering the sedans at $500 over invoice. However the coupes are selling at MSRP due to the limited availablility. When replying kindly list the options and location where you purchased the vehicle. Thanks!

$500 over invoice is a steal! Around MSRP makes sense for the 335i coupes. THats basically it. The markup is only 7%, so figure it out from there after you build it on bmwusa.com
at least you already have your handle setup!

In Nor Cal 500 of MSRP on the Coupes is the norm.

Note that contacting a dealer (and especially a specific person) via email or Internet will often get a better price than in the showroom. At one Sou Cal dealership I was told (by their Internet guy) that the price was MSRP in the showroom but $1000 off via the Internet. Remember that commissions are higher in the showroom and they have other costs there as well.

If you get in contact with the right guy it's fairly easy to get significantly better than $1000 off right now.

We got $1500 off of our 335i. I don't think that's much of a deal, but our dealer is selling most at MSRP.

You are in Long Beach?

Damn I'm in Hawaii and ordered my 335 from Long Beach BMW about a month ago. Jason Serot was my sales advisor. He did the deal I wanted....it was a lease and I got the base money factor (0.0015) with $900 over invoice for the sedan, 6 speed, metallic paint, sport, premium, cold weather, sirius, pdc. Cap cost was around $43K and my payment is a little over $600/month with $1,100 due at signing.

The deal took about 5 minutes. I called him up, told him the deal I wanted and he said "ok". It was that easy.

I called quite a few other dealers in So Cal and they all LIED about the money factor. They all wanted to add a dealer mark up on that and the lease acquisition fee.

Long Beach BMW is fantastic.

Must be a coupe? Dealers have a small allotment of orders for coupes, but have many more order allotments for sedans.

It seems like the coupes are in high demand and that dealers are getting what they want for them. Shortly after I ordered my car, the dealer called and said they could get one for me that was different from what I ordered. It was a black one with automatic. My order is for a Montego blue with manual. I had the sense that he would have loved to give me a nice deal on that one and keep the one he ordered for me in his pocket.

Car: 335i Coupe
Exterior: Sparkling Graphite
Interior: Black Dakota Leather
Trim: Dark Burl Walnut

Dealer: BMW of Dallas
Price: MSRP w/o Alarm/Tint added = $48,695
Add-On: Alarm/Tint around $800 total
Options: Premium, Sport, Automatic, iDrive/Nav (wish I got Comfort Access)

No negotiation on he price what-so-ever. Waited almost 60 days after I ordered it, BUT well worth the wait! This is my first BMW (coming from a Pontiac Trans Am WS6 in the late 90s and a Lexus ES300) and I won't every leave! I'm already planning my next BMW :)

Car: 335i Coupe
Exterior: Sparkling Graphite
Interior: Black Dakota Leather
Trim: Aliminum
Dealer: Auto Broker, Northern California
Price: $45,995 (this is about 1100 of MSRP)
Options: Premium, Sport, Automatic, Comfort Access

Big Plus is that I had it in less than 1 week from order with very few cars available. I couldn't be happier with the car and I would have paid more. If you find one you like then just buy it. I wouldn't obsess too much with the pricing as this car makes me say things like "...great value, it's worth more than what I paid, once I drove it I knew I would own no matter what it took".

The more of these threads I read, the better I feel about the deal I got.

I ordered:

335i coupe
black sapphire metallic
coral red w/ grey poplar

premium pkg, sport pkg, comfort access, heated seats and park distance.

MSRP: $46,570
I paid: $44,070 ($2500 off msrp)

My family has had a good relationship with our dealer, but we've all moved away from BMW's over the last year. The sales manager said he wanted us to come back, so he offered me the $2500 off. I didn't even have to haggle with them.
So, if any of you are in New England I would recomend BMW of Peabody.

Spent a few days calling almost every dealership in socal, got at least 2 places offering 1000 over invoice, went with the local one in SD (Cunningham).

You should always start at invoice and negotiate from there, especially on a car that usually sells at above invoice.

I actually got the quotes just before Christmas. It was for an ordered car and March production. (I'm doing PCD in May but ordering early to make sure an allocation is available.) There are almost no 335 coupes in inventory in Sou Cal (and none with the equipment I want) so prices are at a premium. The dealer I ordered from claims to have 63 on order ahead of mine.

Note also that I got these quotes by emailing specific Internet Managers at 4 dealerships. If you just walk in to the showroom prices are liable to be higher.

335 Sedans are in good supply so the prices wil be quite a bit better on them.

$500 over invoice at Stevens Creek BMW in NorCal
Contact the Fleet Dealer

E90 Sedan w/ Premium, Sport, Cold, Navigation, Step

I already pre-negotiated at several dealerships beforehand, and called him to match my best offer of $2000 below MSRP from SoCal (Assael in Monrovia). He said yes, and I went in to negotiate the final $500 over invoice.

They had a rep as snobs b4 but the Fleet Dealer was extremely cool to me. They've certainly changed their image (floor sales people were also nice and congratulated me on my purchase). In comparison, I was almost shoo'd off the parking lot a few years ago for trying to negotiate.

I'm in the market right now.

The under-rated HP and torque numbers and all the claims about how smooth and comfortable this car is just convinced me it is the car for my daily commute. I will still need something silly fast for the weekend cruises (maybe the new Skyline GTR when it comes out or put a blower on the '09 Camaro SS).

Anyway...is $500-1,000 over invoice the best prices you guys are seeing on the 335i Sedans? I understand the coupes are a lot harder to negotiate.

At first glance I would say you should be able to do better on a 335i sedan. Some of the information is missing to really analyze the deal, but it sounds high.

A little more information would help in the analysis.

1. What cap cost is he using to get to the payment (i.e. how much are you getting off MSRP)?
2. What money factor (should be .0015 unless he is marking it up)?
3. What security deposit (should be $625 unless he is marking it up)?
4. What is the CA tax rate for leases, is tax collected over each payment, and is it based on full car value or cap cost minus residual (this can vary by state)?

As an example, if you negotiate the cap cost down to $46,000 (getting $1420 off MSRP is well within normal for what people have posted here for sedans), the dealer is using the BMWFS money factor and security deposit and CA tax is 7.25% collected over the monthly payments, then your payment should be ~$581 with $1806 out of pocket (not including title and registration fees).

Money factor is .0015,not positive though.
No security deposit.
Tax rate is 7.75% collected over the payments, and the 625.00 has them included.
Not sure what the cap was, maybe 1k off of the 47420 but not positive.
2200 out of pocket covered title and regestration, fees, etc.

Thats about all I remember.

If there is no security deposit (assume this is not your first bmw?) then your out-of-pocket costs don't make sense. The up front costs COULD consist of:

1. Cap reduction (down payment)
2. Security deposit
3. 1st month payment
4. Bank fee
5. Title/tags
6. Taxes if collected up front

In your example, assuming no security deposit and payment of $625, bank fee of $625 and taxes paid over the montly payments then your up front costs SHOULD only be $1250 plus title/tags. That being said, there must be a cap-reduction (down payment) included in your $2200 number.

I just ran your numbers through my spreadsheet and it looks like I can get to your $625 payment number using the MSRP as the cap cost (meaning he is not giving you any discount off MSRP) and assuming that $1000 of your up front costs are going to cap reduction (down payment). Based on this, this is NOT a good deal. You should try to get him to give you money off MSRP (most people are getting AT LEAST $1000 off MSRP on sedans) and then scrap the cap reduction cost (down payment) because those aren't really a good idea on a lease.

So I would assume the deal is

625 first payment
625 bank fee
title and reg? 500?
Leaving 450 for cap reduction?

Since taxes are in the payments over the lease period. Is it possible to get a better deal? And if so by how much?

Title/tags/registration shouldn't be more than $250 total. If they are claiming more, ask for a breakdown and check with your local DMV.

You should absolutely be able to get a better deal. Based on everything we've talked about, the dealer is still using MSRP as the cap cost and only reducing it through you providing a down payment. Most people who have bought/leased a 335i sedan (and posted about their deal here) have gotten between $1000 and $1500 off MSRP at least. I got $1200 off MSRP and that was with NO negotiation whatsoever on my part. So, negotiating your discount is where you need to start. Once you've nailed down the discount from MSRP (or above invoice if you prefer to deal that way), THEN you can start to look at the other fees, etc. If the dealer is not willing to discount off MSRP then go somewhere else. If this were a coupe, it'd be a different story. A lot of people are paying MSRP for coupes due to supply/demand.

I don't claim to understand all the craziness that California entails, but why would title/tags/registration change based on the type of car you are registering? I can understand the cost going up based on car value if there is a tax included, but if you are just buying tags, registering the car, and paying a title fee, what does the cost of the car have to do with it?

It's normal to pay tax on a cap cost reduction. As I mentioned though, it is the consensus of most people that a cap cost reduction (down payment) is not a very good idea on a lease. Better to negotiate a good deal with the money coming out of the dealer's pocket (by means of discounting off MSRP) than by coming out of your pocket never to be seen again.

The major part of CA license fees is essentially a personal property tax which is based on the selling price of the vehicle. This is actually payable every year to DMV when registration is renewed (although it decreases as the car depreciates). www.dmv.ca.gov actually has a calculator for figuring out the amount. This is different from the sales tax (they go through different agencies) even though they are both based on the same price.

That would explain it! Living in a state that doesn't charge personal property tax, I always forget that there are states that do! :)

Regardless of these fees though, Jrocket should be able to get a better deal by negotiating the cap cost of the car. Sounds like his dealer is still basing the sale and payment info on MSRP.

CA stopped the personal property tax on things like household furniture, etc. quite some time ago but I guess automobiles were too big a revenue stream to lose (and they actually call it a License Fee). On the other hand, my property tax on a house I've lived in for over 30 years is 1/4 what it would be if I bought it today so I'm not complaining too much. Welcome to the exciting world of California politics.

I dont mind the dealer making a living but I dont want to get ripped either.I was using Leaseguide to try and confirm the numbers, seems its close if I dont put in any ad ons like banks fees, first payment etc.

http://leaseguide.com/calc.htm

Depending on whose estimate you trust, there is between $4k and $6k profit for a dealer on a $47k 3 series. So asking for $1000-$1500 off MSRP is not preventing the dealer from making a very good profit on the car.

As I mentioned, my dealer took $1200 off without me even asking, that was just where they started their deal. The MSRP on my sedan was $47020.

I just sent out some e-mails to 4 or 5 dealers,so we'll see who has a better offer.

No need to be rude. But your "truth" only looks at the reported invoice vs MSRP for the car. That is only part of the picture. The entire profit for the dealer goes beyond this number, including manufacturer incentives for volume of cars sold, incentives for cars financed through BMWFS, etc. These (plus other) manufacturer/dealer incentives bring the profit number up above the $4000 mark I mentioned on the car that we are discussing.

And if you'll read my previous posts, I'm not suggesting he go in asking for the car at invoice. I'm suggesting he can get the car for around $1500 under MSRP. So using your numbers, the dealer would be making at least $1700 on the car, and using my numbers it would be more like $3000 after all of their incentives.

If you want to talk ROI (Return on Investment), then you have to consider time as well. If the car sits on the lot for a month (which is probably way more than average for a BMW) it earns 3255 for an investment for 1 month of 45K. That's 7%/month or 86%/year ROI. That's WAY over simplified but it shows how very good money can be made on low profit margins.

Put another way, I know of a dealer who sells 300 cars a month. That's $1,000,000 a month in gross profit on new car sales alone. Again it's over simplified but not too shabby.

This deal already sounds much better than the one you posted a few days ago. Higher MSRP by $600, lower out of pocket by $300 and lower monthly payment by $28.50. Sounds like a win/win/win!!!

I think you are right about -1,500 on a sedan. The other profit avenues are variable and the ONLY person that even sees any of that is the owner. Not the GM, GSM, etc. I am still awed that people will go to all of the trouble to nickle and dime a 50k car. It does not make economic sense due to opportunity cost, etc. It also seems the more of a mooch the client is the more demanding he/she is. They pay the least and expect the most.....

Glad I don't have to deal with these people.....

How long are 335i's sitting around?

In Sou Cal, probably just a few days. Most dealers have just 1 or 2 shown in inventory (and some have none).

One dealer I talked to claimed to have 63 on order for customers.

EDIT: This is for 335 Coupes. There are plenty of 335 Sedans.

You assume that the dealer is going to receive all these incentives. No offense but the dealer is always going to make money. That's what allows us as consumers to purchase vehicles face to face with a hand shake. What you guys are really talking about is taking the profit or commission away from the salesman. You walk in high and mighty and demand $500-$1000 over invoice and you might get the car but thats all you get. No friendly face to say hi to or someone to call when you feel service has mistreated you, or even to go play a game of golf with. All this talk of discounts shows that you guys who can supposedly afford the best vehicles on earth can't pony up the extra $1000 so the salesman can feed the kid at home and pay the mortgage. It's really pathetic. So quit with the true profit thing. Anyone who is in business tries to maximize profit. It's called CAPITALISM!

If thats the case, then why would a dealership have an internet department, where you can do everything over the web? No hugging needed and the guy still makes a living.I could care less about the salesman to be honest with you.I care about my moeny and the deal Im getting, just as the salesman dont give a rats about me after I walk our the door, until I come back for another car.And why should he care,he just selling a material item,he's not saving a life here. This may be harsh to some, but its the truth, something people cant deal with anymore.Whens the last time a salesman was up front and told you where every single dime was going from this sale?Never.

Service advisors,I take care of.They terat me right and I return the favor with what I can.

Capitalism runs both ways, and that is why we are able to have this discussion.

Regarding true profit, you have to know what the true profit is on an item in order to negotiate a fair deal for both parties in any transaction.

My salesman offered $1200 off MSRP without me even asking and has been extremely friendly with me via phone/email since my deal was made. Always returns my emails, always returns my calls. I expect he will not have a problem with shaking my hand when I go to pick up the car in a month. I don't expect to play golf with him, so I can't comment on that. Seems he doesn't subscribe to the mantra that the car must be sold at MSRP like you do.

Pricing is dependent on your local market. I was able to get $1,500 off sticker without to much trouble. Some people in other parts of the country are paying sticker or very close to it.

There are not many people getting much more than $1500, just like Jhunter said. I got $1250 off mine.

Take it! If the dealer is idiotic enough to discount a coupe he deserves it. There is no need on the earth to discount a coupe! (Plus, it will have an effect on the resale value once the discounting begins)

What's included in that price other than the car? Taxes? Tags? Title? If nothing, that's a pretty awful deal since the MSRP on the car with destination is only $41,295. No one here has posted that they've had to pay OVER sticker to get a 335i coupe. Some have had to pay sticker, and a lot have gotten under sticker.

Still tough to comment on the deal without knowing your tax rate, and what the rest of the stuff being tacked on is.

Assuming a tax rate of 7.75% and the "other" items being $250 then you're getting about $1000 off MSRP. You should be able to do a little better on a sedan, but it's not a horrible deal.

the second one i called wanted 38,395 plus TTL which is 41,751

So it is exactly $1000 off MSRP. You could do better but no harm in taking that deal. Depends on how much more leg work you're willing to do and how badly you want to get your order in.

One last thing you could try is dropping by a local or nearby large volume dealer and tell them you have an offer for $1500 off MSRP and you're ready to order from them for some reason (location, recommendation, etc) if they'll match the deal. Just actually be ready to order on the spot if they take it, otherwise it's just rude.

Jason Serot is the real deal.I sent out 4-5 inquiries to dealers on what car I wanted and what deal I was looking to get.Jason responded with straight talk and no BS.Told me exactly what and where all of the dollar figures were going and gave me the best offer yet.If my other deal goes through I'll be down there buying from him.

Is your deal for a purchase or lease? I found Long Beach BMW to be priced on the high side. Actually South Bay BMW offered a more competitive purchase price at $45k flat pre-tax for a Sedan with:
Sports Package
Premium Package
Navigation
Comfort Access
Cold Weather Package
Metallic Paint

premium pkg, sport pkg, comfort access, heated seats and park distance.

Or try Tulley BMW in Nashua, NH. Very good deal there too. CA Steve Hammond

TRy Cars.com for exactly the options you want and they suggest 3 dealers you can email automatically for an INternet quote in your area. I found most were offering 4% off MSRP. Cars.com lists the Invoice price for everything as well. I ended up buying from a sales rep at a dealership in Chicago I know. Got 2000.00 off MSRP or basically 4% on a 328xi. One of the 3 Internet guys also was doing 4% of MSRP on the 335xi as well in CHicago area.

I just ordered a 2008 335i coupe in SoCal and the guy took $500 off MSRP and threw in free floor mats.
auto trans
premium pack
sports pack
paddle shifters
comfort access
Nav
sirius sat
Ipod
Metallic paint
Total price quoted $50,670 -$500 =$50,170
I suppose I could have shopped around on the phone/net for a better price but I was too excited and wanted to get my order in now. Its hard to negotiate at the dealership when the car isn't due to arrive for 6-8 weeks.
