What size tires should I run for the winter on my '98 M3 with 17" wheels ?

The narrowest possible. Check the tire placard in your driver's doorframe (or owner's manual). It should list all the tires that are "approved". It'll probably be 225/45-17.

Something else to consider - I'm not sure the 225/45/17 will fit well on an 8.5" wheel (assuming you have the stock staggered wheels?) You may end up running 235/40/17 as the best compromise. Generally, though, you'd want a narrower tire with a taller sidewall for winter use.

If the rears are 8.5", check with the tire manufacturer for approved rim widths. For example, the Bridgestone REVO1 225/45-17 is approved for rims from 7" to 8.5".

Yeah I have the stock wheels. I have 224/45/17 on the fronts and 245/40/17 on the rears.
Would a 235/45/17 be ok. I found a decent deal on some.
Thanks
