Howdy! =)
I tried searching, results weren't what I had expected so I turn to making a new thread. I just wanted to get some specific information or overview of the 89 525i's. I know they are packing the m20 and I found as much information as I needed about them but I am more into the features of the 525 as oppose to say the 535 etc. Please feel free to chime in if you can help me out!
Thanks

the only real difference is the motor and transmission. Usually the 535s (being the "premium" model) had a few nicer touches like wheels, leather, and wood trim. Other than that, the cars are nearly identical.
There are tons of great resources out there, one of my favs is www.bmwe34.net. Has tons of info. However, you could probably find lots more just by googling for e34. By the way, "E34" refers to the 1989-1995 5 series, in case you've never heard the term before.
The 89-90 525 had the M20 engine, and in 91 was upgraded to the M50 which produced a little more power and torque. In 93 it got VANOS (just google for it) which some say is more of a headache than it's worth. Personally, I have no experience with it, but IIRC it doesn't produce any more power than the non-VANOS version. I'm sure others could add much to my slim shreds of information.
Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

Hey,
Well guys :D I asked the question for a reason. This afternoon I went down to talk to a mechanic selling a 1989 525i. even though it is a bit rough around the edges I fell in love. 5 speed, the clutch is good on the car. but the exterior is a bit messed and the interior is a bit messed. ellipisoid lights(sp?) and debadged. 300,000 kms but I'm not worried, i'm going to go out and buy another m20 engine after the christmas holidays to basically be prepared. I'm going to go pick it up on thursday. Also I might mention that this is my first car and I've been waiting a long time for something to get my hands on, work on and call my own. It's got a remus exhaust on it so it purrs like no tommorow. yeah yeah yeah, I bet you all are wondering wow those are a lot of miles but for 700 CAD in total I think it wasn't too much of a loss. This isn't going to be a daily driver until spring/summer so I've got some time to freshen it up. pics soon, im 17 so this is my pride and joy right now!

That is a good amount of km's, but if you keep up with maintenance and everything, it will go for another 150k no problem. Congrats on the purchase!

What's the rust situation like? I have an 1989 525 that's from Toronto and even though I've been in Los Angeles since 2001 I'm still dealing with rust that took hold in Canada.

I just did the same, bought a 90 525 with 169 miles, it was imported to canada, to get it cert. All i needed was a new muffler and windshield. Plan on putting a new shifter soon, and other than that jsut drive it, oh the interior is shot in my too but in the process of looking for some new seats, congrats on you E34, hope it has no rust, mine has none :D

Curious as to what the rust looks like.
Sounds like a great buy...do you know about the timing belt? When it was last changed?

Everyone told me when i was thinking about replaceing my m20 that just put a m50, but m20 is fast enough its a fun car and once you at 100km it drives soo smooth, who cares in the end, its a luxuary car.

it is just the greatest feeling in the world aint it? ye, mine has a bit of rust, I have the winter in the garage to take care of that make sure she's freshend up for spring/summer. As I think I've said before the remus exhaust really makes it hearable around the corner, and its so deep and nice. I think I also mentioned mine does come with a short throw kit so thats an added perk, going to get it on thursday can hardly wait

You're smarter beyond your years to garage it this winter and freshen it up.
I'm sure you've looked, but www.bmwe34.net is a goldmine.
