Just purchased my first 2002. Always been an admirer of the 02 but have been mixed up in British cars (Jag XK120 and Austin Healey 3000) and other German Car (VWs '55 Convertible, '66 21-Window Samba, and P-cars 912).

So I picked up a 1973 Tii for a couple of grand this weekend. Mechanically it runs good and is driveable, has Recaros from a 320 is, bigger brakes front and rear (this thing stops like no other vehicle I have driven), lowered springs, timing belt just done and a bigger radiator. Looks like custom headers that flow into a cherry bomb or some other system.

Cosmetically she is challenged. Some rocker rust that will need to be cut out and replaced with new metal, other spots of surface rust. Bad paint. Missing some trim parts, chrome etc. Needs new carpets, door panels, and center console.

I've searched the forum but could not find the answer to this question I have? For a doner vehicle for parts which are interchangeable? For example I have a source for eith a 1969 1600-2 or a 1976 2002. Which is a better choice? I know it depends on what I need but is there a rule of thumb for interchangeable parts? Are there any lists published on this forum?

Thanks in advance and I will soon post pics of my new toy!

Welcome.

Is it still a tii, with the mechanical fuel injection? If so, then there's no timing belt, did you mean chain? Or, does it have a different motor?

The '69 is pretty old, but some non-driveline parts may transfer (interior, misc underhood). But they are still pretty old. For the '76, many non-driveline parts should transfer if they are in better shape. Many tii suspension and brake parts are slightly different than regular '02s. But yours already has non-original brakes, so you'll need to figure out what they are. You may not want either parts car at this point. Are they worth fixing, or are they really only good for parts? Between '69 and '76 you're at opposite ends of the age '02 scale. Be careful, if you buy a parts car, you may end up with 2 '02 projects.

The 1600-2 I think. Its a roundie anyway + has the early style rear bar. If you get it, Id be interested in the front over riders if your willing to part with them (and if they are the style im thinking of) Could I maybe get a picture? Let me know :D

Also, welcome to the addiction. Pics of the new car ASAP!

BTW: Make sure the rear shock towers are sound as well as the floors.

Welcome to the madness!

Your car might've had the fuel injection pump belt changed (not the timing belt). Regarding the exhaust system, IMHO stock is the best way to go for tii's. The factory manifold is as good as or better than a header, at least for street use. If you want somewhat better flow, a 2002 turbo rear portion helps, but is pricy and hard to find.

Please post some pics!

So I picked up a 1973 Tii for a couple of grand this weekend.... I've searched the forum but could not find the answer to this question I have? For a doner vehicle for parts which are interchangeable? For example I have a source for eith a 1969 1600-2 or a 1976 2002.

Howdy and welcome to the world of 02s.

As a new Tii owner, there are no doubt a lot of things to read up on. I would suggest you visit the Tii Register (http://www.tiiregister.com) as we have a lot of material there. We also have a resource database there and you can submit questions, stories, photos of your car, and get history on the 2002tii, how to do routine maintainence to your car, especially the fuel injection system. There is a link here to find out more build information on your car from BMW's historic division, Mobile Tradition.

Second, I completed a total rebuild of a 74 2002tii this year and would offer up my site as a possible alternative to other things you might be considering. My site is http://www.my2002tii.com.

My car once looked like this:

Then later this:

On your question, your car is closer to the parts of the 1976 than the 1600-2. Rather than a donor there is also new steel patch panels you can buy from various sources.

The more questions you have, the more we try to answer them, so keep them coming :hacker

Welcome aboard! Man, you West Coast people have a chance to the nicest deals on these cars! A tii for 2K!! Unbelievable!
Keith's site shows-n-tells an inspiring TRUE story on how an '02 can become a stunning work of art! BTW: Us non-tii automatics benefit from his story!

Anyway, congrats on your purchase and keep that baby running!
