I have driven in years! Man, why did I wait so long! This 11 y/o car puts to shame my FIL's 2007 Tahoe LTZ, MIL's 2006 Grand Cherokee Limited, the 2004 Marauder I just got rid of, and practically every thing I have driven since my sisters last 535i in '89.
I still like my old-school 65 Mustang, but for a DD,....this 540 is heaven!
I knew you guys would understand.:D

I agree 1000% ...It doesn't take much to be better than those. Heck ...an Accord would have beat them easily.

Definitely better than those 2 SUV's and the Marauder, but Marauders are pretty quick.
I use to drive my dads Mercury Grand Marquis around, and let me tell ya it was a smooth ride. It didn't handle that well but it had some nut with that 4.6L under the hood. I cant say anything bad about the reliabilty of it either, it went over 200,000+ miles(had a rough life :)).
Mercury could of had a really bad ass sedan on their hands if they had supercharged the Marauder. I mean 300hp is just not enough compared to what the compition was was running for hp, just seemed kind of primitive but its ford so what do you expect?

Mercury Maurader? Ah, they didn't run/handle bad for being the last of the flying boats. BTW, they've got some extremely fast Crown Vics running around, stay away from anything that says Kenny Brown on it. 4.5 seconds to 60, and 13.1 in the quarter with not much more then a little 'ol supercharger.
One used to run down at the track on Friday nights, and he'd be popping off 12.90s all night. Then he'd just drive home. Never ran slicks, open exhaust, nothing. Stock though, they're like mid 7s to 60 and mid 15s in the quarter, still not that bad for the size of it.

My 92 Crown Vic had almost 240K on it when I got rid of it, and it's still on the road. See it every once in a while. Starting to smoke a little now, but it's still going.

That stock Maurauder was a dog off the line. My warmed up 65 Mustang 302 could get a good jump on it. It takes more than 300hp to move that tank. It felt like you were pulling a trailer until about 20mph and 4000 rpms, then it woke up. Rode smoothly, but quite disconnected to the road. Exhaust sounded like it was more powerful than it was. I think you'll find the truely fast ones are the supercharged and twin SC'd ones.
The SUV's were compared only because the purchase prices were on the high $40k's and low $50k range.

I would have to agree with you that the E34 is one of the finest cars! I love my 1990 E34 it drives fantastic and has such a solid feel. I have owned many cars and it's hard to believe this is the oldest car I've ever owned (16 yrs) but one of the best! I'm convinced it drives better than my 98 Volvo S70. My E34 is currently at 299 K miles, and runs like a champ!
Them dam German's know how to truly build cars that last forever!:alright :alright

Marauders are quick. Not only that but they can't weight much more than a 540i.

scurl, I owned a 2004 since new until 3 months ago. 'Quick' is not a word I would chose to describe it. Yes, it takes off from 20mph, but not quick off the line. IMO, they are more show than go. I was very dissapointed. The guys at maurauder.net agree the that SC is needed.
You may have had other experiences.
The 540i weighs 404lbs less
The 540i beats the MM 0-60 by full second, even with 20 less hp and 23 less ft/lbs tq.
The 540i handles like a sports sedan, the MM looks like a sports sedan.
If I had no first hand experience with the MM, I would have though otherwise.

I owned a 1998 golf vr6, and it's just not the same category.
when I got the VR, it was all I could dream of, torque, sound!
but here I am..my 1st E34..
Sure dosen't have the torque, dosen't have the VR6 sound, but it's SO much more than that now...the luxury, feeling behind the wheel, overall feeling that you drive a masterpeice makes the little things go blah.
awesome car.

You must drive a 525i, because I can tell you from first hand experience, the 535i and the 540i have a truckload of torque (the 535i just a bit less than a VR6, the 540i just a bit more) and some of the smoothest torque curves around. They both sound amazing as well. My 535i sounds meaner than my friend's VR6 ever has. You just can't beat the roar of a big straight six at 6500 RPMs.

Marauder? Comparing an e34 with a Marauder is like putting Heidi Klum against Rosie O'donnel.

Oh BS :D
Seriously
Have you ever driven a Marauder? A 2007 Tahoe? They are both excellent vehicles. And the maurader will probably smoke the 540. Of course, the last mauraduer I rode in had a blower in it, but stock on the highway they really hold their own

Surely you jest
Both of my bimmers are out of commission
My suburban has gained the name, "Old Reliable"
You cant judge all BMW's by the e30 :D
bimmers seem to suffer from the same mindless lemon problem as every other car. They are better cars and better engineered, but I wouldnt call my TA crap. I wouldnt call my suburban crap either. Sure they are cheasy, but they get the job done , comfortably too. And my TA handles as well as my L7 if not better, but thats aboutt o change for both of them:evil2
