I have a few leads on used wheels, but out of curiousity I'm wondering if my cracked wheel is repairable. I had one reputable wheel repair place local to me tell me it's not after I emailed them the pictures. Wheel is an E39 style 5, crack is on the outside lip.

Thoughts?

Hmmm... another local place just emailed me back saying $149 for the repair.

Or I can buy a used wheel in nice shape for $190.

Hmmm...

Yes indeed that is a very sad story in that link. Wheels America, and I DO NOT SPEAK FOR THEM AT ALL, have and will refuse to repair wheels deemed to be too far gone. Mine were done due to minor curb rash and in that they re machined each wheel. Taking off the very slightest of material and restoring the origional finish. Including powerder coating them clear.

A friend across the street cracked one of his wheels, a bbs I think. It seemed very slight and was on the outer edge of the lip. WA refused to repair it deeming it a safety issue. If you can go to thier web site you can see some of the stuff they can do. However, if you go to one of thier shops in person, or call them, they will explain in detail what they can and will "repair" or refinish.

Judging from a second look at that picture I'd say give them a call and ask. I personally don't think it can be safely repaired but its worth a shot. Judging also from the date of that post about the accident, and the whole Firestone thing, I would venture to say there are some new rules/laws in place about wheel/tire repairs.

Remember, its always better to fall on the safe side of the fence.

Well, the email I had sent to the repair company contained the two pictures, so hopefully whoever there who quoted the price actually looked at them. The whole thing isn't about cost, I don't mind $40 this way or that way when safety is involved.

I think I might just have the used one from LA sent to me and be done with it. Seller says it's in perfect condition aside from some small curb rash marks, also said it's completely straight.

realistically, i'd just get a new one. having wheels repaired before, if the price difference was that minimal, i'd get a different wheel instead of trying to fix the broken one.
