Hey,

I am posting this b/c my dad is too chicken shiet to post on the boards:D :stickoutt Anyhoo, he has a 2000 740is and would like to upgrade brakes or pads.

I was basically wondering what options he had for the car. If he stuck with the stock rotors what pads could he use and which will help cutback on dust. If he decided to go bigger which kits do you guys suggest?

Thanks for your help, hopefully this will coax him to post:redspot

There are a number of options regarding brakes for the 740.
The most effective of these being the Brembo big brake kit. This includes new and larger X-Drilled rotors as well as 4 piston calipers. I believe that these list for something like $1800 for the fronts. One word of caution, the new big brake rotors will not fit under a standard 16" wheel, so if your dad changes his 18s out in the winter for snow tires, you might want to look at other options.
Moving down from that kit, from a performance standpoint you really are just talking about pads. While many, including myself, have made the switch to slotted or cross drilled rotors, these are more for asthetics than anything else. Unless your dad tracks his car, I doubt he will ever need the advantages the slotted or drilled rotors offer.
For the pads, the standby for the 7 has always been the Mintex Red Box pads. These have almost no dust, and have stopping power comperable to the stock pads. The one thing I will warn you of is that the Mintex pads have a tendancy to squeal if you do not put enough of the anti squeal compound on the back of them. (Coat them like you were putting icing on a cake, 1/8" thick). I have also heard some talk about Rotex, Porterfield and EBC Green Box pads, but don't have any personal experience with them.

Like Greg said, have your Dad look into those Mintex Red pads with his OEM rotors or Mintex Red pads with an upgarade to a set of Zimmermann Cross-drilled rotors. Give one of our supporting vendors a call and ask for the Bimmerforums' discount pricing. Good luck and tell your Dad to get his butt online... ;)
