330ci Vs Audi A4?

So i was on my way home from my buddies house about 12am on 495N. I am cruising along on the way back to my condo and was driving at about 75-80. I came up on some slower traffic and needed to use the slow lane to pass some of the drivers. One that I passed was a white A4 (or so i thought)... next thing i know I see a set of HID's coming up fast in the middle lane. It was the A4..no it's an S4. I say to myself hmmm no traffic and an Audi wants to run. Sure why not... I drop it into fourth and nail it 90-100-110-120 I start thinking why isn't this thing gaining any ground on me? whatever... we keep going and come up to a cluster of cars so i slow down, he decides that he is going to hit the breakdown lane... I get stuck behind a Saab from Maine doing 60 in the passing lane. The Saab finally gets out of my way and i'm off again. We are now coming to a straight that goes for about a mile and wouldn't you know it the S4 is in the middle lane waiting for me. I catch up to him and we sit side by side for a few seconds. I drop it into fourth again at about 85 and we're off. He didn't even start to pull on me until we got up to about 130 (just before i hit the limiter). I was amazed and thinking that he must not be pushing the car otherwise he should just walk all over me right? so we slow down again to about 85-90 and again we go at it from fourth and he doesnt pull on me at all until we hit the 130 mark... We then came to my exit and exchanged thumbs up and went our ways.

I was so impressed that I hung with him. Do you guys think that he was just messing with me or does the AWD play that big a factor at high speed?

Cliff notes: Raced an A4 that turned out to be an S4 and hung with him til about 130.

a4 with s4 badging...S4 should wax the floor with a 330 from any speed unless if you were highly modded and he was bone stock. (finding a bone stock s4 is like finding a bone stock evo/sti/supra too) Id say it was a bolt/chipped a4 with s4 badging or a bad s4 driver?!?

*though i will admit not too sure about the s4 peformance from 80mph+ just basing this off of how quick they are from 0-100*

What year S4 was it, if it was a B5 I could see you keeping up like you did. I believe they only have around 250 hp stock and the awd does affect it on the top end. They take very well to mods but stock their nothing special. If it was a newer one I would say it was a rebadged A4.

yeah..just looked up stats on a 2001 and they only do the 1/4 aroudn 14.4 when bone stock so up top this is a normal outcome if he was bone stock i guess

I am stock other than lowered and it was an 04 or newer one with the V8... I thought that he should have smoked me too which is why i was surprised when we ran like we did... I guess he was just messing with me.

He was def toying with you an 04 or newer s4 would be game over for a 330 even with a bad driver! But good run tho!

I think he might have been toying you but still a good story must have been fun. this is my uncles S4 in germany on the autobahn, hes got the cruise control on. I wish I lived with him:(

Even a tiptronic S4 would have walked away, especially above 100mph.

Edit: To clarify, a B6 S4 would have had you easily. A B5 S4 would make this story definitely possible.

I've seen lots of A4 with the S badgings. Maybe it's a regualr A4 S-line? Who knows.
I've also seen Skyline 350GT badged G35 sedans these days....:rolleyes

I used to own/drive a B6 S4, and they are HEAVY, tipping the scales at ~3850 lbs, so despite their 340 hp V8, they are far from fleet of foot. That said, they do have gobs of tourque and I would expect one to pull on you from 60-70 mph or so.

OTOH, a B5 S4 can be made fast enough to eat a B6 S4 as a light snack, and the B6 is not too tunable...

Summary: A B6 S4 has power but hauls a ton of steel, so i would expect it to be faster than your 330, but not as much as you' might think. A B5 stock would hold its own, but a tuned one would smoke you and the B6 S4.

If you read the above posts, you'll realize that It's not an 01... and stock for stock I could probably hang for a while with one of those.... but it was an 04+ and we have already pointed out that he was toying with me..

For your future reference:

An E36 M3 and '01 B5 S4 will run neck-n-neck.
An E36 M3 and a 330 will also hang in the same neighborhood.
Thus, threw a series of complex calculations, formulas, and assumptions I concluded,

A 330 can run with a stock '01 S4. In fact, I'll even give the advantage to the 330.
