Hey guys...
Well, the front bumper on our 540 is pretty much coming apart, after endless abuse from those little concrete parking barriers and steep ramps. Do any of you know a where we can pick up a new front bumper? I've checked Pacific BMW, but I can't find anything front their parts department online. Also, how hard would it be to install one of those myself? something I think labor is going to cost more than the part itself. If it's not too hard, we may just put it up on a lift and put in on ourselves.
Thanks for the help.

while you're at it, why not upgrade with the nicer oem front spoiler or the m-technic one? Check bmwtips for options.

I may be getting rid of my bumper (though you will need to paint it to your color) because I'm upgrading to the '02 bumper and won't need my '00 one anymore. Send me an email if you're interested. I'm in the SF Bay Area and may be able to ship it to you if need be.

Anyone have any information on removing the e39 bumper. How hard is it.

It's not hard to do. Just a lot of screws to deal with. All in all it should take you no more then an hour at best. Depending on where you live I'm sure some of the board member's woulding mind helping you. If you're in the SF Bay Area, I can help you as well.

Well I took all the moldings off on the front bumper and all I saw was a bunch of those push pins. I didn't see any screws. Can you elaborate more on the dismantling. I mean I replaced my bumper on my e36 and the setup was a lot different then what I am seeing on the e39. I might take pics tonight to show you the situation I have in front of me.

Okay, send me some pics. Maybe I can help. Also, post this question on the roadfly board (www.roadfly.org) and ask the folks there. I'm on that board a lot and maybe we can talk realtime. I'm on the E39 board of course.

Lou,
Is the bumper that you are upgrading to like the one in the picture? I have 99 540i that would like to upgrade to the M5 look but I've only seen the $1400 kit. Can we simply replace the bumper skin or what exactly are you replacing? Thanks!

Bumper removal: Been there, done that:
It's pretty easy. there are 3 -8mm bolts thru the front part of the wheel wells, two at the edge and one a little further into the wheel well. Then, you need to pop off the plastic covers just 'medial' to the foglamps. There is a little plastic pop rivit, pull the center part out and the rivit comes out. Just above that area are 2 #50 torx bolts, completely remove those and the bumper cover will slid off. Be careful, because the fog lights and horns are wired in there (maybe not the horns, that might have been my e46).
Those plastic pop rivits hold the plastic bumper cover to the metal bumper support. If you buy a new or used bumper, you'll likely need to reuse your bumper support, so buy 10 or so of those rivits from the dealer. I needed this when I replaced my bumper cover. Honestly, i could probably get the bumper off in 10 minutes now.

I'm actually upgrading the standard '02 bumper (the one with the round fog lights). I know of a few folks who have upgraded to the M5 look and I think it's about $1200 including painting.

Sorry if this is stupid question, does the car in the picture I previously attached have the standard '02 bumper? If so, I think it's pretty close to the M5 and if it's cheaper than the actual M5 bumper, I'm do it.

Alright guys, thanks for the responses, but we're gonna hold off on replacing it until my sister finishes learning how to drive (we're pretty sure she's gonna rip it a few times as well :) )

No, the car in your image as the sport package for '03 models. The '02 bumper kind of looks like the '01 bumper but is a little more refined. You want the either the M5 bumper or the M-Technic bumper.
