A while back I had a problem sort of like that. The door would intermittently go from working just fine to not working at all. For some reason it seems to have fixed it's self. There have been no further instances for years. So far, lol.

It's kind of a PITA to fix but relatively easy to see if your handle is broken or not. You need to pull the door panel off and check out the mechanism.
I've seen on some handles where they break at the metal outer handle pull itself ~1.5" long that hooks to the actual latch mech. If that's the case, you need a new outer handle. Call your BMW dealer ship and see if they can order one that is matched to your existing key set. If not, you'll be stuck with a different key for your door lock.

Unlikely. I have tried but they updated the design making it nearly impossible to swap the lock cylinders without completely hacking the handles.

So can I just buy the handle?

I cold be totally wrong on this.. but with my car.. my door sometimes doesnt open because the window doesnt always go down when i try to open the door.. my handle works perfect.. so i just have to open the window a lil bit to open the door.
