Hey everyone. Long-time listener, first time caller. Well, my 318is is a 1996. I bought it about a six weeks ago. Who else has one? I really like it so far, and I enjoy tinkering with it. I've done some work on it with obvious, easy stuff, but now I need some opinions as to what's wrong with it b/f I tear it apart. First, there's a whirring noise coming from the rear passenger corner of the car, it's only audible when I press the gas. Also, is the microfilter behind the glove box, or is it accessible through the hood like some 318ti's I've read about?

Congrats! I've had a 1995 318is (M42) for about 6 weeks now also, and I too am quite pleased.
My gut feeling about your whirring noise from the rear passenger side of your car during acceleration is your FUEL PUMP - not an uncommon thing. There is a good DIY on the pelican parts website. The good news is that it's not terribly expensive to replace.
According to my Bentley manual, the microfilter is behind the glovebox.
The Bentley repair manual will be a good resource for you if you plan to do a bit of work on your car.
Good luck!

Thanks Matt. Now that I knew what to search for on the forum, apparently the fuel pump problem comes up a lot. I've read some advice on here that I should just leave it b/c they all make noise, but it seems to be getting louder, plus a diagnostic I had run on my car said the fuel pressure was lower than normal...or something like that, I'd have to read the chart again. I think I'll drop the cash and fix it.

is it coming from the back or the front of the car?

It's coming from the rear passenger area of the car. It's a humming/whirring noise that only happens when I hit the gas.

interesting. if you check the fuel pump and that happens to be bad, let me know. i've got the same sound cept it's coming from the front. i'm thinking out my AC compressor bracket is loose. sadly i don't have the tools to get under there and play..... yet :cool
