About to order a 335 and I'm considering the ED. Lot's of good info here on that subject, but I was wondering about the break in period and whether I would be crying while cruising the Autobahn at a 100kmh. There's always the option of ignoring the recommended break in. Thoughts /advice?

Thanks

My dealer said ignore it. The manual says don't exceed 100 mph, nor 4500 rpm for the first 1250 miles.

Regardless of the car type, I always follow a strict break-in period:
0-1500 miles: Keep RPMs below 3k
every 500 miles above that, bump up the RPMs by 500
after 3k miles, car is broken in.

There is so much misinformation regarding break-in, so just do what the manual says. Do not exceed 4500 RPM for the first 1200 miles or 100MPH. That said, BMW does not seem to care about their consumers breaking in their engines, since the ED center in Germany is "conveniently located next to the autobahn". So much for break in.

I didn't follow break in period rules and the car is still running.

Oops... umm they hadn't finished detailing my car the first night i took it home... they asked my opion next day after i put 120 miles on it that night... "well the road noise from those run flats is too much at 110mph i tried 120 but it didn't smooth out there either" lol ;)

They're broken in at the factory anyways when they run the motor so whats the point?

Whether or not they are broken in at the factory no ones knows for sure. But it really is not a big deal how fast you go during break-in. You might even help the engine. The reason why BMW says to keep it under a certain amount of RPM and MPH is that they dont want their new owners killing themselves and suing BMW.

i usually do something similar and will look to do the same when i get mines.

I normally change the oil at 500 miles and 1500 miles, then every 3000.

Anyone know what BMW recommends and if they will cover the oil changes at 500 adn 1500?

No, they wont pay for the oil at 500 and 1500 miles, only on the M cars around 1000 miles. You will have to wait until 15,000 miles or one year.

As far as the break in period goes. My friends dad races porsches and says that you should cycle through all of the gears frequently on a break in period. Dont stomp on it, but get it way up to speed. If you pussy foot the car, long term it will be a pussy car. This is much more regarding manual transmissions, for autos, just dont redline the car and you will be fine.

I always do this method, it works, I owned 16 cars the past 10 years and every car was better then average for performance!

Actualy they provide a computer for more precise interval calculation based on a drive pattern. Recommendations to change 5-15-30 are quite old and applied for engines designed before 1970.

Just an FYI, technically, it measures the duty cycles of the injectors. Ie- WFO a lot will mean earlier oil change. Highway crusising will be a longer interval.

I've always driven my new cars briskly and varied the speed during the first 1000kms or so. But generally I've avoided flat-out acceleration or very high speeds, but I'm not sure if new engines really need the strict break-in or the manufacturer just wants to make sure nothing falls off....LOL

When should I change my oil? I have 600 miles now...

Should I do it at 1200 miles? (when break-in is over).
