I never thought it would happen but it did.....I got into a car accident with my car this past week and damaged the back end pretty good. Since my insurance was canceled for reasons that I cannot get into right now, I was wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on what you think it would cost to fix my car. I know it's hard to tell without physically looking at it but iI thought I would try.

Also what would someone offer me to buy my the car as is. It only has 58,000 miles and before this accident was in mint shape.

I'm sorry for your loss....But now you have an excuse for a new M3 or M5!
If you end up parting it out, can I have the engine and tranny?

I don't know about Ct., but in NJ if you are rear ended you must have valid insurance at the time of loss or else the offending driver's ins. co. has a legal right to deny your claim! Amazing isn't it?

Is the car registered in NH? Looks like NH plates and the dealership on the plateholders says tulleys, nh.... right off Route 3! Right where I used to live!

BTW, be careful looks like the damage is extensive. If there's no frame damage .... you're looking at several thousand in damages there.

Best of luck, hope all works out well.

In the pictures the frame is bent. You can easily see it in the inside view of the trunk. THere is the black trim that is bulging up and is bent. Well that is part of the frame of the car. Sorry to say it but there is some very extensive damage there. If you do end up getting it fixed take it to someone good as you don't want to go cheap on fixing frame damage. It will only come back to bite you in the ass later if you do.

Damn - that is nasty and painful to look at...

Sorry to say, but as others have said -

1) you have a BMW - and from I have learned, BMW uses only their OEM DOT parts to fix their vehicles in the event of collision damage which means you have some MAJOR financial issues if you have NO insurance to cover the damages. This is why it costs so damn much to insure a BMW M3 - the parts replacement costs and the replacement value of the car in the event of a total, or theft...

2) the frame on that car is no doubt damaged - plus, once the outer skins and parts are removed, there is no doubt some serious damage that is hidden that we can't see right now...

3) even to buy another "parts" car and "back halve it", that is extremely expensive to do, for a GOOD body shop that knows what they are doing. That is a repair that has to be done with alignment equipment etc - nothing that a back yard mechanic can do. I would not buy a parts car and back halve the car unless you have the finances to do so.

If you still owe on that car and have no insurance, the best thing for you to do, is bite the bullet and part out the car, taking the money and pay down your loan as much as you can. If you have the amount of cash needed to FIX it, that is your choice, but you will need a REALLY GOOD body shop that will repair that car back to the way it was before the accident... Any time a car is hit that hard and causes frame damage, it is never the same again as it was before the accident.

That was a bad hit from the looks of it and glad you are ok, people can't be fixed as easily, cars can always be replaced/repaired....

Good luck with your car and trying to settle your unfortunate accident.

Yeah now since I am ok I am pissed. Car was mint before this accident. Funny how things happen. After I dropped my buddy off his exact words were dont toal your car your trading it in tommorow. Sure enough I totaled it 3 months later. Go Figure.

If i sell it I would like to sell it as whole. Besides how much would you offer for the motor?

ayton
12-23-2002, 12:16 PM
I feel you....like I said sell it as a whole, besides the most I could offer would be about $2k but would have to wait a little so if you can sell it by all means do so.besides I KNOW you can get more for it.

I would say fix it. I don't think its that bad. If its still drivable then you can remove the rear bumper get some frame shop to pull some of the parts if they are bent and get a new rear trunk lid from some one here parting them out.

It won't be like new, but as long as you can spend around 1k and have it look decent i would do it.

no way that would cost $1k ...unless he sleeps with a gay body shop owner.

Okay maybe not 1K

used rear bumper - ~200
Pulling rear frame ~500
used trunk lid ~200
misc parts from a parted car ~300
fast puddy work and paint job ~500

You have to talk to people and find a cheap body shop that will take cash. If you take it to a popular body shop they will rape you.
$~1700

First off.....you can't get it fixed that cheap.....Its a BMW.....you want it fixed RIGHT......

A M3 never feels the same after its been in an accident....

You're dreaming. That paint job is gonna be uh-oh-maco-ghetto. The entire rear needs to be painted plus blended with the rest of the car. If he does the uh oh maco 500 dollar job, he is going to ruin the beauty of the car.

To my knowledge, insurance companies can't just drop you when you hit something because they don't want to shell out the cash. They have to atleast put the cheddar out for that claim then drop you.

I really hope you wern't driving without insurance. Regardless, I'm not going to critisize, but just wish you good luck. It sucks, some of us have been in that situation (myself included). Just remember its just a car and money, atleast you're okay.

Best of luck to ya.

Wow, when I first looked at that I knew what happened. I almost did the same thing, but luckily pulled out of it. If your OK, that's all that matters. We drive are cars hard and somtimes get bitten, such is life.

I think your best bet is to sell it as a whole or part it out. I just don't think it would be worth it to you to shell out the dough to fix it!! Besides, it'll probably cost you upwards of like $6000 to fix that with all the labor involved to do it correctly and its value just dropped, ALOT!!

Toussi, that is not going to happen. Lets be realistic here. You have to cut that rear quarter out and weld in a new one, replace the subframe, pull out the trunk floor( if its not too creased), align everthing on a frame alignment machine, ect., ect. You can't just slap it together and go. It'll drive all retarded, either you fix it right or sell it off.

The cost i am talking about is getto riging it if he doesn't have the money, why would it drive bad if the rear axles/shocks are okay. Fixing perfectly would not be a good idea unless he had insurance. Maybe you could change insurance companies without them look at the car and then do a claim after a few weeks.

Hell, my door was damaged after some one backed into it, i got a quote from a certified BMW repair center and they want $1500. And we are just talking about a dent size of a water melon on the door with no structural damage.

So we found a place that fixed it for $400 and it looks flawless :redspot

If it were me and I was in that jam, I'd find a cheap 318 with a good body and swap everthing over. That is if your considering fixing it. Its just that with a hit that hard the car will never be the same, no matter how much money you throw at it. A cheap 318 would give you a straight chassis to start with, which would make for a better result. Just a thought, Good Luck!!:)

Toussi, there are some instances where its not that bad and can be fixed cheap. This my friend is not one of them!!

M318 is selling his car for $4k buy that and start swapping

Dade
12-23-2002, 01:32 PM
You need to buy that 318 and start swaping parts ! you will never fix that car and have it drive in a straight line,

buy that 318 and build a sleeper....

sorry man, i know exactly how you feel. i crashed my brother's M3 last month. The front end looked exactly like your rear end. the only engine damage i had was to the radiator, air conditioner, and headlights. all other damage was to the hood, frame, and front end. It cost about $4800 to fix. good luck. take it easy.

Have you cancled your insurance within the past month? If so then you should be covered under the grace period!

sorry man to see some sad pictures. I was rear end last month by flat bed tow truck and pushed into car in the front. I did not even have the car month wanted to kill the jerk who hit me. His insurance company is paying 15k for just for visual damages. I was told by bodyshop that it will go up when they take the car part. I think you should just sell the whole car. Good luck with your car.
