Hi,

1st post so here goes.

Ordered an 07 328ci w/nav, prem, sport etc. loaded.

The car (wife's) will be parked in garage nights & a fairly safe small outside lot where she works, some public coming & going, not gated.

I don't know anything about what comes standard for security on this car. Is it any good?

I am aware that many aftermarket alarms do not co exist well with todays very highly electronic cars & this one will have the nav system on top of all the usual stuff.

What do you guys/gals know/recommend re additional theft security for this new model.

Maybe I'm ok as it comes from the factory, because it's not usually parked in an high exposure area, but then again, the wife does take it to shopping malls & such.

Many thanks!

no 3 series has ever come with alarm from factory. only since 1995, all vehicles have EWS. the alarm is a dealer installed option. all e92 vehicles come with EWSIV. i would wait a little while before getting the alarm retrofitted. we have had numerous issues with trying to retrofit the alarm with the current PROGMAN CIP 23.02.00. Usually the radio2 module or ccc will stop working or the satellite module will crash.

I would think the factory security features are good enough. I don't know if the BMW Assist option has some extra features in this regard or not.

What are the factory security features. Just beep the horn, or does some disable of ign/fuel happen? How hard/easy to steal a newer year 3 series?

Thanks.

Why does it need alarm? You can't start it without keys anyaway.Broken windows and stolen valuables? Usually it happens much faster than you can notice that alarm triggered.

Excuse the noob questions, what is EWS & EWSIV?

Built in features.... I assumed there were some. Maybe not, I just assumed that when the car is opened without the key the engine is electronically disabled in some way and the horn or lights go off...but maybe not.

Answered part of my own question.

So this is akin to the garage door opener that has a changing/rolling code. That's good.

Even if ignored, I think a beeping horn/siren will "eventually" get some attention, even if it is to go examine the broken glass of a steal attempt.

According to my dealer, a correct version of PROGMAN is still not available to install the alarm on my 2006 E91. Does anybody have an update on this issue? Does anybody have a 2006 E91 with alarm installed and functioning?

The main thing is that the car has GPS which enables BMW to locate it anywhere when stolen. Also bear in mind that many insurance compnaies give a discount for having an alarm so it may pay for itself. Also if someone tries to jack up the car and steal the wheels the alarm will go off. I got one, but I live in Crooklyn :-)
