I have one similar to the second picture, really isn't all that bad once your hand recovers from the first 3rd degree burn :D
Jokes aside, it does get warm, but i've never had a problem shifting with it on a summers day, and the way the shifter feels with this knob more than outweighs the downside.

I bought a Whalen Shift Machine ///M3 shift knob a couple years back from the classifieds. It's heavy so it removed a lot of the notchiness in shifting. Also made the throws slightly more effortless. I recommend it.

So where can we get a Whalen shift knob?

Contact Whamac, he's the person who makes them I believe, he posted the pictures of the shift knobs :)
or... do a google search for Whalen Shift Machine

So is it worth 130 bucks? Seems steep for a shift knob to me.

My stock lighted ///M shift knob falls off all the time when I shift really fast and hard. One time my younger brother took his buddy out for a joy ride in my M3 and came back and the shift knob was just hanging there and they pretended nothing happened.

Maybe the 'cooling fins' model? :D
(Disclaimer: not really for sale; I was just getting a little crazy with my wire EDM machine...) :embarrasm

Yes, Yes and Yes... and no, Doug does not pay me to say that!
Once on properly it's near impossible to yank off, but can be taken off in about 2 seconds if you need it to come off.

mine did the same thats why I need another one. looks like we will have to cap the original wires though.

Exactly the same way a compressed air fitting works.
The shift lever is the male fitting; the knob is the female (and I'm not just using that anology because I drive a "girlie car"!) :D

Yes.
A Lexan pin fits into the same slot in the top of your shift lever that your stock knob uses.

Have you ever considered (or would it be possible) for you to fabricate an aluminium version and anodize it black?

I could. But most folks like the weight of the stainless steel.
I had a few of the stainless ones plated black, with not so great results.
I don't think I'll go down that road again.
