depends on the rims you have as you may not be able to fit them even if you roll the fenders. why didnt you go 235 in the front or 245 all around?

many smart bmw guys tell me it's much better to have smaller tires up in front. in fact, i've never heard otherwise. the factory rims came with 245 out back and 225's in front, but when i bought the car, it had 255's in the back. just wondering if 255's would be better

What would be best is 245's all around on non staggered wheels.

yeah, haha, I'd suggest using hte smart bmw guys advice then.

the only difference with the tires up front was some bimmers came with staggered set ups. Since there was alot of oversteer with amateur drivers on the 95s, 96+ (i believe that is when it changed) went to a non staggered set up, to cut down on that.

Some people prefer staggered set ups, some non staggered. I had a non staggered when I bought the car, now I have a staggered set up. Wasn't a major preference for me, just the rims I got, i wanted them wider in the rear, so I got it. 245/255 won't make much of a difference. It depends on your rims. If you had 255 on them before, and you want them that wide, get 255s if you want. It probably would make more of a difference as an aesthetic mod if you don't do auto x or drag your car or anything major like that.

Hey Giter ... good to see you posting again. Hope you're taking good care of yourself over there!

Regarding the tire/wheel config ... I think its the other way around.

95 235's all around
96+ 225 front / 245 rear

To the original poster ... there is no "right answer" here ... it's gonna be a matter of preference.

I prefer to understeer, so I run smaller up front

I think you will be happier with 245s. They will not have the rubbing/clearance issue you may have with the 255. There is no point running the 255 unless you are autoxing.

The 245's will be fine for the street.

I'm doing great man, thanks for the thoughts.:buttrock

Also, thanks for correcting me. I'm not going to bother to look it up, I'm just going to assume it is right. I am have been off these past couple of days. I don't know what it is. I'm feeling like crap really. :embarrasm

If you like to understeer, then go with 225s up front and 255s in the back, but you are just increasing the disparity between the sizes, and giving more grip out back in relation to up front.
I would go with 245s all around, but that's just me, I like more front end 'bite'. Anybody telling you its "much better" to have smaller tires up front is mistaken, its not "better" it just creates more understeer, and if thats what you want, then its better, but if you like your car more neutral, than its worse. Like giter said there is no right answer. There is rarely better or worse in modifications, just trade-offs and deciding what you want.

thanks guys... i'm selling the car hopefully so i'm sticking with the same rims. I love the car... it's soooo fast, but it breaks once a month, so i'm trading my 12 flat quarter mile m3 for a lotus elise w/ a nice reliable toyota engine

LOL serious. Doesn't sound right for a person that can't make a basic tire decision
