ok, I'm seriously thinking of selling the 97 328i and my 86 535i for a new Mini.
my reasoning is this, both cars are getting expensive to maintain (no warranty) and I'd like to change things up a little....
I would only consider the Cooper "S" knowing I'd want the extra power....
I'm also 6"3' with fairly long legs, is this an issue?
hows the insurance working out on these things (I'm 23 with a BAD record.....)
any pro's and cons to this idea?

Well, I don't think the height thing should be a problem. I'm 6'1 and I don't have the seat all the way back when I drive. I'm not sure about insurance since I don't pay it :devillook (and mine isn't the S anyway) but you should definately go give one a test run.
The only thing that bigger people have a problem with is the pedals. What size are your feet? Mine are 14s and at times with the wrong shoes on my foot kind of gets wedged between the brake pedal and the side wall when I'm pressing the gas. It's not a big issue, and I've learned to deal with it.... but its something to consider.

I'm only 6' and fit fine, but after ordering FIVE of these at five different dealerships before they came out (just to make sure I'd get what I wanted, soon) I canceled my orders after driving the demo unit in Sacramento. Instead I saved $10K and bought a '95 BMW M3. Reasons? The interior plastic was the biggest factor: WAYYYY cheap looking and feeling. The "aluminum” trim is plastic, which would be okay, but it is cheap looking and feeling plastic with big, sharp molding ridges left in it. The dash was also bad plastic, sort of like that found on model airplane kits. Also the build quality is just not up to normal standards, much less BMW standards. The heavily optioned unit I wanted was about $25K, and for that kind of money there are some very desirable choices, both used and new with better fit, finish, build quality, warranties, etc.
The MINI IS a kick to drive: lovely noises from the SC, great handling, good ergonomics (other than the center mounted speedometer) and “cute”. (OK, so I don’t like the last part, but it can be forgiven.) However, a CPO M3 is all the above, except cute, and a MUCH better automobile. IMHO.

My dad got the S, hes 6-2 with long legs, and hes got no problem fitting in it. One thing to consider is getting it without the sunroof for about 2 extra inches of headroom, this also makes it easy to fit with a helmet on for those track days.
