Does anyone know if and when they will be putting SMG in the M5's?? I would like to get one for the misses but she can't drive stick.

Yeah, as far as I hear they will be putting SMG's on all the M series. In fact, there is a rumor that BMW may decide to make it the only available transmission.

I wonder how the SMG / SSG (non M version) will fare on older, worn transmissions. I had a worn Getrag in my M3, and you had to baby it into gear to prevent grinding. I still take it easy on the shifts until the gear oil is up to temp, and I use Red Line MTL. I even double-clutch to downshift to prevent sychro wear on my newer Euro close-ratio transmission. Banging it up and down through the gears via a 2000psi shifting mechanism just screams "premature failure" to me.
