S52 cams will not fit in an M50 without changing the lifter buckets and lifters. You will need a set of S50 cams.

So I would pretty much need the s52 valvetrain?

Just the lifter buckets and lifters. Or you could use M52 lifter buckets and lifters.

AKA Camshaft Trays, or Bearing Ledges.

Ah gotcha thanks.
Did you guys do many schrick cams? Im looking at the bimmerworld site and they dont seem to be any diffrent for the s50 or s52.. but the sunbelts are.
So what is diffrent about the obd 2 and the obd 1 cam trays?

Done many Schrick cams. Those schrick cams are designed for the M3, they would likely flow more air than a little 2.5 could handle so you wouldn't see much bennefit from them. That is why sunbelt designed cams for the smaller motor.
The later cars have smaller lifters and more clearance on the later model (m52/s52) cams. An advantage to the smaller lifters is less valve train weight.

By more clearance do you mean they sit lower in the head?
So what would happen if I were to use the m50 lifters? Too much pressure on lifters?
Since all the heads are the same and the CL of the cam will be in the same position, and if this chart is correct shouldnt they work?... Why is the duration and lift of the s52 variable?
S50 cam specs
Duration / Lift
252 / 10.2 Intake
240 / 9.7 Exhaust
S52 cam specs
Duration / Lift
250-252 / 10.2-10.28 Intake
244 / 9.67- 10.2 Exhaust

The M50 lifters are physically too large to fit in the later model ledges.
The later ledges clearanced for counter-weights on the S52/M52 camshafts.
From the measurements I've seen, the S50 and S52 cams have the same duration and lift. The lift is NEVER variable so those specs are incorrect.

Yeah that hole variable looking cam didnt seem right to me... Maybe its highs and lows some guy got.
Just went to real oem and took a look at how its actually put together. All makes sence now.
Thanks again for the info.

Just get the S50 cams. Also do a search. There are pages and pages of discussion on this. I think you would benefit from that info.
