My CEL came on this morning.
I took it to autozone. Pulled codes P1421 and P1423.
Codes came up there as "Catalyst Damage" and "EGI Functionality Test Failed," respectively.
I leave there thinking im going to drop thousands in repairs.
I get back here and search the forum.
Everyone here says P1421 and P1423 are Air pumps and valves that can be replaced DIY for less than $300.
The guys on the forums are right, right?
I left autozone scared shitless and I want to be sure I'm now resting comfortably looking at about $250 in repairs.
Thanks!!
Sam.

Well if your catalytic converter is damaged and you have to meet emissions it will cost you big bucks . Autozone doesnt suck because your car threw shitty codes.

I dont have to meet emissions i'm in NH.
What I'm saying is that autozone told me the code meant 1 thing and everyone on this forum is saying code P1421 means something completely different than what they told me.

Well its not like the people working there have engineering degrees or anything, they just matched the code your car threw to codes in the incorrect index most likely, give them a break.

Alright listen boys.
If YOU drove home from autozone, as a college student, thinking you had to replace a few $k worth of stuff, and found out it was $250, you'd be mad too.
BUT they did check the code for free, so maybe i'll cut them some slack.

Autozone does suck, but I'd be happy about that. Most code readers give pretty generic descriptions, often times the problem doesn't directly relate to the code. My E34 540/6 sometimes gave O2 sensor faults with new O2 sensors, the real problem was leaky intake gaskets, a common M60 problem. Leaky gaskets throw off the AFR, sees the O2 sensor signal is out of spec and throws a code. This was pulling the code with my Peake reader, so it's not just Autozone. Supposedly the dealer has much better code readers, but I somehow doubt they'd do it for free.

As long as you want, it only on there to heat the cats up more quickly to reduce cold start emissions.

Those codes might mean something different at Autozone and then on Bf.c.
Code 1431 on Autozone scanner might be catalytic and it might be Air pump on a BMW scanner.
Autozone does not suck.
I took my mom's windstar because it was throwing a CEL light. They said it was both the post/pre O2 sensor. I installed the O2 sensors and uplugged the battery, the CEL hasn't came since then.

How much did you pay for the diagnosis at AutoZone?

Nothing?

Hmmmm.

They told you the results of a generic code reader. Nothing more, nothing less. If you took it to BMW they would have charged you a couple of hundred and been more accurate because they could have referenced the codes against what BMW says they really mean. This is true of every car. My Lexus through off codes that sounded off the same alarm and it was not until I was able to look at the official reference.

as an autozoner i call tell u the scanners they use are usually for domestic cars, even though it can read foreign codes and even then the code readers usually only read codes from p000-p999, generally anything over p1100 are dealer specific...u have to either a go to the stealership or find someone that has a genesis scan tool that has the software *roughly 3,000 a pop for the genesis and thats the "cheap" one* for a more specific answer... you're check engine light is usually only emissions related, o2, afm, mas, cat converters, and thats it

If you're that worried about making repairs on your car...maybe it's time for a bicycle...

The CEL is ALWAYS emissions related.

How long can I drive with a bad Air pump?
I took mine out if it makes you feel any better lol If it goes bad you have 3 choices.
1. Replace it: DIY will cost about $250, will die again in 5-10 yrs
2. Simulate it: Cost is $200, but never throws a CEL again
3. Remove it and put a piece of tape over the CEL
I choose option 3 :devillook
