Can anyone explain how the dual mass flywheel works? I read recently that the OEM flywheel cannot be machined and that there are some springs in it. I have a condition that I'm not experienced with. When I was starting out on a steep hill, I slipped the clutch more than I would have liked to. It then felt as though my clutch was smoked. But, after some time it was back to normal....or as normal as I can tell. I've never had a clutch do this before. I have accelerated from low RPMs to see if it's slipping and it seems to be OK. Then a couple of weeks ago I had the dealer flush/replace the brake fluid. They told me the clutch was very bad. When I got the car back, both the clutch and the brakes felt soft again. But, after some time...seems to be back to normal. Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible there is a problem with the flywheel? Thanks for your consideration. Jay

Sounds like your clutch is just about fried. How many miles do you have on your present clutch? Mine did the exact same thing. It would slip for a period of time, and would feel normal at times. It would slip under hard acceleration, but at normal speeds, it would feel ok.
Sooooo, I just replaced it with a Sach's sport clutch and now it feels great!!

Thanks so much for the link. Very interesting. I never knew a flywheel could be so complex. I feel more comfortable now that I know how they work. Probably just time for a new clutch. That also explains why they say you'll get vibration from putting in an aluminum flywheel.
