View Full Version : Whose Parents Bought Them Their BMW?

Disclaimer: This thread will not tolerate flaming of people who were given cars by their parents.
I, for one, got my E30 for free. It cost $4,000; a price which I am going to pay them(my parents) back. I want the car to be mine and mine alone, I don't want them to own a cent of it. I can't stand to owe them. Anyway, tell me if your mom or dad bought you your car and whether or not you plan on paying them back. Just wondering, and I will cover your back should flaming happen.

I got mine for free too. I'll admit it. It was my graduation present. My parents won't let me work, school first, then anything else comes afterwards. In a sense, I pay them back with my grades and when I become a doctor, I'll buy them a nice retirement home ;)
Don't take me for a spoiled brat though because I'm not. Not all spoiled kids are brats. I am thankful for what I get and recieve every day of my life. I wish that was the case for some of the people I know though

Not gonna lie...parents put the down payment...co signed for it...and pay for it while im at school. I have to pay for insurance....and make the payments while im at home working..so about 4 or 5 months of the year....not a bad deal!!!! oh yeah i pay for all mods!!!! The mom doesnt understand why i need to change anything on my car "you drive a bmw...its like the nicest car out there what else does it need"...lol!!!!
And as statted by Preppy...i too am not a spoiled brat. I appreciate everything that i get...i have the utmost respect for my father and what he has done with his life....and providing for his family. I too hope to follow in his footsteps and keep alive what he has worked so hard to build....and myself work hard to build into something bigger!!!! I have also worked since i was 13...probably even sooner...if you count going to work with my dad when i was like 5 and him given me like 10 bucks!!!! lol...

Mine paid for mine. They're blessed and they wanted me to have a good car that'd last me a long time. I never asked for a M3, but I'm sure as hell not complaining. ;) :D My parents want me to put school first, so thats what I'm doing. Their reward is knowing that I'm able and am putting all I can towards my education. Everyone who first meets me assumes I'm a spoiled brat, which that isnt the case at all, spoiled, yeah I guess so, but brat? No. All the mods are entirely my money also. My parents don't expect me to pay them back, or wouldn't even accept the money if I did try (not that I wouldn't if they would), they just wanted me to have it. I thank God for parents like that every day. :)

Boy, you guys sure are lucky.......I paid 15$k for mine straight up two years ago, and I have put close to 20$k into it myself, and i am only 21, as long as you boys appreciate what you have, which you all do, then it really doesn't matter, If your parents are fortunate enough to be able to afford a nice car for their kids, more power to em' and if not, then if you personally want a nice car, then you have to bust your ass for it, mine is certainly become quite the money pit, but i am starting a new job soon that should help with my mod fever...hehehe.....Widebody due in springtime, keep your eyes peeled.....

If envy is a sin then I'm going to hell...
B.T.W. What does it cost in insurance for a 17-18 year old male to drive a M3? Or are your parents listed as the primary driver?

When my 90 acclaim broke down my parents wanted to get me a reliable and safe car. Id been pushing a BMW for a long time, and when we found a 96 M3 that drove great and wasnt too worn except for paint and leather, my parents dropped 20K. I work summers now, but im not expected to directly pay them back for the car. It was an early graduation present. I feel bad sometimes, but then again, whats the point in feeling guilty? I dont show it off or anything, and although im spoiled im not a brat. Just lucky I guess, plus, being a mommas boy didnt hurt.

7.5k, clean record. i shit you not. yes, my parents were listed as the primary drivers, funny thing that is, somehow my dad got the rate down to 900/yr full coverage with AAA.
my parents paid for half of the car, i paid the other half through working/investing while i was in high school. i originally wanted a 95 m3 at the time, but my dad said no to that, and he offered to put up the rest of the cost as long as i quit working(:dunno ) and put my efforts towards school.
my parents are generous, but i never expect it from them, and i am from humble beginnings so i most definitely appreciate what i have been given in this life.

My mom bought me my first car which was an integra for about $2.5K (salvaged). After high school I went out and bought a '93 325i and put it under my mom's name for insurance reason. I had it for about a year when I came home one day and my mom asked me if I could sell my car and help her pay some of her debts. It was painful but I had to support my mom. I pretty much went without my own car for a few years driving random people's car before I went out and bought my '97 M3/4.

I put down $2300 and they put down $1000. Got a loan, parents paid for half of the loan. We're aren't exactly wealthy, so why'd they do it? Well when I first went to get a car I had like $3000 saved up from savings bonds, christmas presents, mowing yards, etc. and they told me to simply go find a car. I wanted a first generation Mitsu Eclipse. Found one for $3000 exactly. AWD Turbo model, teal green, total sleeper. It was perfect. Insurance however, turned out to be $1200 every 6 months for me. Ouch. So they then said "no car for you". :(
Then one day my Mom showed up in a white 92 325i with 150,000 miles and said "You like?" I was unable to respond because I was busy humping the exhaust :) (not really...) we thought the mileage was a little high so I looked around and found the 318is.
Happy? HELL YEA.
I pay insurance, mods, gas, and paid for half of the car. Not bad if you ask me.

Well my parents would not give me anything for my car, but my grandfather did. I paid $2k for my car and my grandfather covererd the rest...~12-14k(if you include taxes and stuff I think).
My mom bought me my first car. for $70. it was a 1981 Honda Civic Sedan. We got it from a friend. My second car was a 1983 Honda Accord, I paid half. On all my cars I paid insurance and gas. Ever since then, I bought every car I've ever had. I'm 22 and I just picked up my dream car. :-)

well.... my M3 was bought and paid for by me. Although my mom co-signed for me b/c I had no " car credit" ... only excellent credit with CC companies and bills.. etc etc.. but I always drove the hand-me-down's in the family. Anyway, so I pay for everything... monthly payments, insurance, gas, MODs, everything..... and on top of that go to college 15 hours a semester, work 40 hours a week, and still manage to keep my sanity. Yeah, not easy

My parents put 5000 for a car for me and I paid the rest. I also pay for gas, mods, and maintanence (it gets to be expensive). I definitly appreciate what I have and wouldn't trade it and I would definitly not consider myself spoiled - there are others I know with much nicer things then I am who don't deserve it. Some might say I don't deserve a BMW, but I work hard and I only got it because it was a good deal, I originally was looking for a honda or acura until I saw this car and fell in love - especially because it was priced to buy. It funny when people look at my car, for sure they think I'm spoiled, but frankly the car is worth no more then a honda or acura, I just got a lucky buy.

Honestly, I think anyone that claims to appreciate a gift is just BSing. You never appreciate anything to it's fullest extent until you pay for it yourself. Just my humble opinion, but it's true.

I remember asking my parents for a car once. They said "Sure, go get one". Will you help pay? - "no". Help on insurance? - "no". Will you co-sign? - "no". I was a bit surprised, but not angry at all. I knew that I wouldn't any obligations to anyone else except maybe a bank. Because of my parents consistent "no's" I was able to establish a good credit history from early on in life, without any help. I was 17 years old got an $8500 loan for a kickass, sporty, sweet Geo Storrm. :laugh Bank decided to give me a chance cause I was in top 10% of my high school class. (Still don't know how that happened :devillook)
w00t, my parents bought me my car, as a grad gift. I worked my ass off at school, and I plan on paying my parents back by getting them a nice house/car when i'm done with college/grad/whatever and land a nice job.
I do pay for gas/mods though.
And no, I'm not 'spoiled.' I had to bus my ass to and from school everyday for 4 years. didn't matter if it was raining/cold/whatever. I didnt get my license until 3 days before my 18th birfday (which was wayyy after I graduated school and had my car sitting in the garage) :stickoutt

so you dont appreciate your parents creating you...and raising you? surely you didnt pay for all those things. there is a misconception that people cannot appreciate things unless they "earn" them. guess what...you CANT earn everything...expecially life. so the best thing to do is take advantage of opportunities and always be thankful.

I pay for my cars by myself. I paid for my 325e cash in April. I'm 16 now, and I want to move up to an M3. I'm trying to talk my parents into letting me co-sign an M3 in their name, I just want one so bad and the payments would be easy for me. My parents only help a little on insurance.
Ducky, you're in HS, right? Is it worth it to finance a car? Any tips for me?

word. My parents did the same thing for me, except i wasnt willing to shell out 5k a year for insurance, so i got the 323is. Stereotypes blow, but i try to do everything to avoid being classified as a spoiled rich kid, i worked for 2 summers saving money to buy my own car, i had about 2400 saved when the parents surprised me with the 323is. Now, im broke, its all in mods. Suspension just got here today :redspot

My parents love me.
I actually think everyone who got a car is spoiled, because being spoiled doesn't necessarily carry a negative connotation...
I think I am very spoiled to have received the exact car i wanted when i was only 15 years old. Having the rents like the car helped out a little to. ;)
I have to pay for gas/insurance/mods, and thats not easy working crappy 20(if that) hour weeks...And going to private school...2.8k a year i have to pay, and so far i have paid 3 months..
I'm really proud of myself, and if i ever get the chance, i would love to pay my parents back. The only way i can right now is to obey them, and i usually try pretty hard to do that.
I'm very grateful for my car, and don't complain one bit about it.
I agree, take opportunities you are given, because trying to go through life with no help is hard as hell, and if you aren't getting opportunities, at least stay close to something, so you know you are still appreciated, whether it is a material posession or not.

I am blown away by the number of guys whoose parents bought them a BMW, not just a 'beater' car to get to and from school or a job, but a BMW.
When I was in school, I ended up buying an old Dodge Dart for $1200 from my Father because it was the only thing I could afford. I actually made payments, although he didn't charge me any interest so I guess that's something!

you can EARN everything
you think you earned the right to wake up every day? even if youre not religious...you cant possibly believe that statement. if you live by that principle, then you suddenly have to justify all things that happen to you, good or bad.
could you really have afforded whatever car/posessions you have if your parents hadnt fed and supported you growing up? if you have no parents, then the goverment or some charity might lend a hand...did you earn that help? have you ever been sick? did you earn that too? do you earn love from a girlfriend/wife? there are things, like love, that cannot be earned. they can only be given.
learning to be appreciative and conscious of opportunity will bring rewards.

They CHOSE to have a child, and along w/ a child comes responsibilties - like clothing and feeding and putting a roof over his/her head. It's not like I was sitting in my father's testicles as a sperm, just wishing that they would choose me to fertilize the egg . They can tell you that I don't ask for much, if anything.

Paying for ALL of your living expenses, including rent, water bills, electricity bills, food, phone, cell phone, satellite TV, cable Internet, car loan, car insurance and on top of that, entertainment, is a HUGE responsibility. I've been doing this since I graduated from college and got my first job.
If you take out a $20K loan over 6 years with a 6.5% APR (which is a pretty good rate), you're paying close to $400 per month. That plus insurance, which can be upwards of $200 or $300 per month for an 18-20 year old person, means $600-700 per month you're spending on your car alone. A LEASE on an E46 M3 will cost ya about $700 all said and done, JUST on the car.
For those of you that earn money on a part time basis, imagine making that kind of money every month ON TOP OF rent, bills and entertainment. Eh? Eh? Get it? :D
I have much respect for those of you that work after school or during the summer to pay for your gas/insurance/mods, but wait until you have to pay for EVERYTHING. This is a very tough thing to do. I've been doing it for about 4 years now and I could FINALLY, BARELY afford to pay for my '97 328is (first car was a leased Jetta), which I am greatly thankful to have because it brings me so much joy in life.
I think I'm doing a lot better than a lot of people out there at this point in my life (I'm 25, soon to be 26). And yet, I crave for an M but can't afford one... :(
So the point that I'm trying to make with this very long post is this. For those of you with M3's and other nice cars, please let your parents know how much you appreciate their generosity by being a good son/daughter. It is their hard earned money (and I know how hard it can be to earn money to afford something) that allows you to drive such a nice car so early in life. And if you're so inclined, see if you can make car payments on top of whatever you already pay for during your summer break or something. ;)

the point is...whether it be human life, cars, whatever---you cant possibly earn EVERYTHING you receive. so instead of deciding which things are ok to earn and which are ok to be given...just be thankful for what you have been given and work to earn what you have not. either way, it would be foolish to limit ones opportunities for the sake of "earning" them. thats all im sayin.

ah alright. I get what you're trying to say now.
I guess I should've added that just becuase you receive something as a gift doesn't mean you aren't thankful for it. Maybe it's just me, but everything that I've earned and paid for myself I have a bigger connection to than to those things that my parents have chipped in for or I have recieved as a gift.

I admit, me and my Brother are spoiled. He drives a 98 Toyota Supra TT and I drive a 2002 M3, both cars fully paid off by Mom and Dad, insurance too. We were not always rich though there were times when we had to work at age 14 to buy food and help pay the bills. Although we drive nice cars we we don't go bragging or flossing them in front of people's faces like other people. I'm only 20 and he's 22. I appreciate everything my parents do for me and they said we can pay them back by not putting them in nursing homes when they retire. When I get rich someday I'm gonna take care of them like they took care of me. There's a difference between spoiled kids and bratty spoiled kids, and I'm not bratty =]. And I really hate it when people hate on you because you have a nice car.... say anything you want, if your parents wanted to buy you a nice car you wouldn't refuse it either =]
the only reason why i drive a bmw is because my dad figured that there would be no reason to buy another car for me to drive when he has three for himself... So yes i guess you could say my dad bought my bmw but I do not go around flaunting that look im 16 and drive a bmw and I hate people that do that with any of their possessions. I would like to try to pay for it but thats unlikey because my parents want me to put my education first and worry about money and that kind of stuff later.

Pretty C32 you have there Frank, it looks like you live at a Mercedes dealership, ha.
But yeah, my Dad has paid for both my 00 Mustang and my 325. So I guess I fall in with the rest of the 'spoiled' bunch. But I don't take it for granted, I never will. BTW, I never asked for either one of these cars, both came as a complete surprise. I certainly wasnt going to turn them down.

Yes, my parents paid for most of my car. However, I got a 1570 on the PSAT :D And they want me to focus on school... I also have to pay for all mods myself.

Hey, I got a 1580 PSAT, a full scholarship to school and was in top 10% of my class, and got nothing and am still carless. While it would be nice to get a car for nothing, I am working every summer for four years as a valet for my future E30 M3, and in the process become a far better driver than those who got theirs as a "graduation present" So, no biggie, no flames, it's cool, see you in the twisties!:D

My parents bought me my first car... a 1989 Volvo 245DL (wagon). It had power locks and working A/C. I was thrilled. I was going to buy my own Volvo wagon.. for $300 and the thing was a shitbox. My parents wanted me in something reliable, so they bought me another one in better condition. A year later, my parents lent me $8000 to buy my 325iX. Six months later, I have finally paid them off (last week). Now I can fix a few things and start with the mods. :D

totalled by Farmer's Insurance. the initial estiment on fixing the car by Schnider (sp??) Auto Body was $24k dollars. The second one was $29k almost $30k. The car's frame was twisted, engine moved, external damage, etc. The guy from Farmer's insurance decide it was too much of a cost to fix the car (i was sad of course) since the cost to fix it was well over half of what the car was worth. In the end Farmer's Insurance paid us $42k with $1k deductable which makes it $41k. The out of door for my car was $46k includes the $2k extended warranty which later we got the money back also.
the VIN # is WBABM5340YJN93516
the money we got from my car went into what i'm now driving after a year and 4 months later. That 328Ci will live on in my memory.

I have just been married for 4 months so I guess it is part fo being married now.. being on your own and all. well I got a car I have always wanted a bmw and teh z3 are awesome cars.. plus I like 2 seater (del sol was a 2 seater)

My parents never bought any of my cars, even when I was 16, if I wanted a car, I had to be able to afford it myself, so I worked my butt off with several part time jobs.
I was fortunate enough to have them pay for my car insurance, though, until I graduated college... about 10 yrs ago...

My parents were paying for all my repairs, but then I decided that since I already owe them $6,000 for the car, repairs, and insurance, enough is enough. I didn't buy Christmas gifts for my friends so then I'd be able to afford a wheel bearing and Bently manual, both of which I sorely need. It sucks having a job and making like no money. It also sucks having all your friends getting you awesome gifts and having nothing to give to them in return.

I think as long as you don't act like a little spoiled b*tch, you don't deserve to be scoffed at. If you're flaunting it and burning out 90% of your driving, then you need to be. I relate it to recieving a gift, whether it be for a reason or not. If you get the gift, people wont roll their eyes at you because you accepted it. But, if you're rubbing it in people's faces, they have the right to punch you in the face for being an idiot.

My parents gave me my E30 cause they figured I'd kill myself in a Civic. I recently got the hand me down (94' 325is) cause the E30 isn't as reliable as it once was and I'm going to be transfering from community college next year. I pay for gas myself and mods. Parts for maintaince is also payed for by me. With the help of good friends, all the work to keep my car running is done in the garage. The biggest job my friend and I have accomplished is installing a junkyard motor into the E30. The cars may have been given to me but the sense of accomplishment is certainly there when you work on your own car.

I had a 1997 Ford Ranger before the E30. It was reliable but so damn boring to drive. I got my 325i a couple of months ago and have done all of the repairs myself and bought new tires. Insurance isn't too bad so far, I do all of the high-school things to lower biannual payments. Honestly, I actually feel like my E30 is a good friend, fuck the Ranger... Oh we actually made a profit on the Ranger being sold and buying the E30 :)

Well I'm not a BMW owner (yet), but I'll throw in.
Parents got me my first car, 2000 Civic, but they said I had to have a job while owning it. So I got a job, got the car for free... pay for 1/2 insurance, gas, maintence, etc.
There are a lot more spoiled kids out there than some on this forum. It makes me sick watching stuck up bitches climbing out of E46 M3's, Carreras, Benz's, etc.
Just be thankful for our parents and their financial stability, use their example and make something of yourself so you can show your kids the same luxury.

My parents bought me my first BMW, a 1985 535i with 208,000 miles for $2200. I fixed a bad clutch, bad driveshaft, bad brake bomb, and other misc oddities on it. I wrecked the sh!t out of it later that fall, took an S curve at 80MPH. I salvaged the engine, trans, driveshaft, brain and wiring, which later went into a 1975 530i that my parents owned from new. Its engine died, so it was perfect for the swap. I drove it for another 100k miles, then had to ditch the chassis due to excessive cancer. The engine, trans, wiring, driveshaft, and brain all went into a 1984 533i that I drove yet another 50-60k miles before I finally junked it. I sold the transmission, driveshaft, shifter, pedals, and all other related hardware to a guy with a 6-series for his 5-speed conversion just 2 years ago.

i'll throw my .02 in here.my dad didn't give a car ever, even though he could have.
my son now-his christmas present last year was an 85 monte carlo.he refused to help with the intial maint.when he tore the trans out 2 months later, the car was sold.we helped a little on his 2nd car,an 88 regal,he used a tree for brakes.didn't want to slow down in the fog.i forgot to mention i gave him my 83 volvo turbo wagon that needed a turbo, didn't want to work and buy a turbo.it was sold.
he doesn't get to borrow my car and has to depend on other people for transport.i take him to work but he wont save his hard earned $$$$.he wants a nice car and really wants a bimmer, but with his history,he will buy, insure, and maintain his next set of wheels on his own.
it sounds that many of you appreciate your gift and that's good.we helped his older sister with her first 2 cars, but she earned the right, and still does.

I bought my first car, which was a '92 F-150. I paid for it with money I had saved from my previous summers working. Then from graduation I helped pay for my car, but parents paid for most of it. I do pay for all the work done on it, and for any and all mods that will go into it. I was greatful for the car, and still am. But, I screwed up my clutch and would not let them pay for it, when it was knowingly my fault. This is the last car I will get buying though, so I have to take care of it. So, I am going to limit the amount of mods, until I get out of school and can get another car. Then I will just make this one a weekend car. I think alot of kids parents buy their cars, or help in someway. But, not all seem to truly be greatful for it. None in this forum, but those that I know. I thank my parents everytime I get the chance for everything that they have given me, and I thank my dad for the time that he has to put in at work so I can drive what I do, and our family can live the way we do. Hopefully I will be able to provide for my family in the same way, and also do something special for my parents. I need to make some money first though. They are real big on school first, and I can just work and save over the summer. But, I plan on trying to get some sort of job this next semester so I can have some more money, and maybe do something nice for their anniversery.

My mom bought an 82 Land Cruiser for myself and all of my sisters and I to drive as we went through high school.
I have borrowed money from her for some of my cars, but most were on my own. I borrowed $ from her for my 90 M3, and 97 328is.
I have borrowed money from her on cars I turned and sold (928S4, etc), but I always make a profit, and cut her in on it.
Most of my cars I purchase dirt cheap, and sometimes I have to go halfsies with a buddy. (bought an overrevved 92 325is for 2.5k threw a new head on it and sold it for 5900 :D

the first car I had, it was my dad's car, and I just drove it, I wouldn't call it my own, and he would not call it mine. I paid for mantience, insurance, and all those stupid mods I put on.
For awhile I was driving a Z4 which was also my dad's but he wanted me to drive it, I didn't mind driving it :D , but it wasn't mine and I didn't consider it to be mine
I was very close to buying a 325is and just doing some mods, but I wanted an M3, there was no way of obtaining one at 17 w/o a loan. So my dad found one that he thought was a good deal, and I got it. I put 7200 down, and have 30 payments left. The car is under my dad's name, but it is my car or the banks car, but not my parents. I pay for the insurance as well, but not as a primary driver.

my parents didnt buy my bmw for me, which is cool- i wasn't expecting them to. they threw in 5k as a graduation gift from college, but it would have gone to whatever i wanted, i just happened to be planning on buying the car the day before the walk ceremony. (had a good job lined up knew it was gonna work out, wanted the car)
but i can relate to all those who's parents bought them their cars and strangers thought they were brats. i burned through 9 cars from getting my drivers licence and graduating college (no gaps or flunking). only one POS in the whole line- which was my fault. i just HAD to get a bronco.... pile of crap :nono . replaced that with a nice 2-door 4x4 tahoe though :buttrock
N E WAYZ; point is just cause you didnt pay for it, doesnt mean you cant respect how it was paid for and treat it well. however, when you do pay for it yourself, you're attention span will increase dramatically and you wont be getting as bored with your car so quick ;)

I got my car when my dad bought a new Z4 and didn't sell his old bimmer. So then when it started breaking all the time he and I became frustrated and he gave me 10k to put towards a new one, and also sell the old one. So when I sold it I needed a car really bad and ended up with one that wasn't exactly my first choice, so now I'm selling that and using the money to buy an M3. He has no problem giving me a car as long as I take care of it and still resepect him. I think respect says a lot when it comes to spoiled brats.

My parents bought a new 328is in 1996. As a college graduation present, they gave me this car in 2001. I always treated it like it was mine and I loved that car. I paid a lot of money once I got it to make it perfect and then I traded it in for my 97 M3 in 2002 and just finished paying off my loan for it, so yes, my parents gave me their BMW, but I also paid for roughly half of the M3 by myself...I was definitely not spoiled growing up in an Army family with 3 other siblings...we had to work hard to earn what we got and I think I was the most surprised when they wanted to give me their 328is...I think its because they already had plans to buy a new car anyway. So, I'll take it!
