View Full Version : Weird problems after manifold swap

I posted this in the regular e36 forum figuring I may get some more views and quicker answers...guess not!! I don't mean to double post, so if someone wants, delete my post in the other forum.

I installed the m50 manifold today, everything went relatively smooth other than I broke the plastic protector off the intake air temp. sensor. Also did ASC delete at the same time (disconnected/removed the ASC throttle body, but left the actuator connected)

Anyways, I reconnected everything that was disconnected, started it and it idles smoothly. But, when I give it the lightest amount of throttle that it'll respond to, it starts to bog and run like crap - but goes right back to a proper but rougher idle. If I give it a decent bit of gas, it runs smooth and responds to throttle blips well (sounds good.)

Here's the weird(er) part: Twice, when I tried to run it at around 1k-1200 rpm, I heard a single weird metal crushing noise after about 3 seconds at that engine speed (for lack of better words - like if you were to push a soda can in on one side then let it 'slap' back out, that's what it sounded like.) It would make the noise, then I'd let it idle and then when I tried to run at just above idle again, it made the sound. I don't remember disconnecting anything not related to the intake.

I turned the engine off, made sure everything else was a-ok. Turned it back on, and had a check engine light. I scanned the codes, and got P0335 and P01525. They mean (from about.com):

P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
P1525 Throttle Position (TP) Sensor Learned Closed Throttle Angle Degrees Out-Of-Range OR
P1525 "A" Camshaft Position Actuator Control Open Circuit Bank 1 (BMW)

ANY idea's what could have happened, and what the codes mean? Very frustrating! :confused

it all seems to be circuit codes.... the most i can think of is to double and triple check all electrical connections. do you have a chilton or bentley? where are the connectors that go to the sensors in question?

the metallic noise worries me greatly.... maybe a little more detail on the noise if at all possible... (sounds like hollow or solid metal, sounds like something broke off or just hit each other.... etc) g/l...

I was assuming a vaccum leak somewhere but I really have no idea whats up with hte metal clapping noise.

Well my mistake was putting everything back together at night... I made a very sophomoric mistake and COMPLETELY missed the cam position sensor connector... I went out with a flashlight to check the front of the fuel rail, and I saw the metal clip thing that you depress to remove connectors, and thought damn it's already connected. Well, this morning (when I was a little more aware of everything) I noticed the clip was differnet than the others (ie the idle control valve), which has the metal clip thing on the cable itself. Oops!

I have a feeling the noise I heard (which sounded metallic at the time) was probably the car backfiring or pinging (neither of which I've ever heard on a car I've owned) Thanks for your help guys.

Have to say, this was one of the easiest (not counting my fu*k-up) and most worth while things I have EVER done to a car. I got the manifold from vines on ebay and all the other parts from autohausaz, the dealer, home depot, and true value... total was a little under $190!

How does it feel? Any loss in tq?

Very minor loss, the upper end MORE than makes up for it. It already feels a LOT more powerful than before, and I've only had it on for a day... not much time for the ECU to adjust.

congratulations! simple mistake..... it happens. now go enjoy that manifold!
