hi

i got locked out of my own car somehow (key in ignition, engine on, doors
locked, wtf?!)

anyway

how do you turn off the car without going inside? i tried to disconnect the battery but that didn't do anything. I also had the hood open.

also I had a really hard time breaking into the car. the windows seal pretty tightly against the rubber, so I did not want to damage the glass or door.

i don't really believe the car is thief proof, but is there a way to open the car cleanly?

better keep it in mind for next time, might be useful information to some of you in the future as well, thanks!

If the hood is up, you can undo the top cover on the fuel rail and pull the injector wiring harness up. That will kill the engine. Getting in is another matter.

take the airbox off and cover the MAF to suffocate the car. cut it's air supply off

that's the easiest way by far.

Or start pulling fuses. :redspot

Locksmiths have trouble getting in our cars.... the hole double locking feature makes it near impossible...

You can pull the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box.

Really.. what about using one of those things they stick down the window, like the old school way to open a car door.. I'm guessing that works on like old chevy's and crap.

okay i want you to try this... Its funny acutally... Go out to your car. Sit in it, close all the doors then arm the alarm... Try to get out from the inside. Mine doesnt let me... Unlock button doesnt work.. Pulling up on the door pins does nothing and the door handles are inoperable.... Its fun to lock my friends in the car and watch them freak out...

I locked my car like that one time when my girlfriend and I first started going out. I asked if she could open the door and get out and she couldn't. Kinda creeped her out ;)

I would never lock my friends in like that because they would start banging on the glass and stuff. Rule #1 of my car is "DO NOT TOUCH ANY GLASS". I hate dirty smudgy glass :shifty

You guys must not have kids. Within 2 minutes of my daughter being in my car, her greasy little fingers are all over the window.

OP, I imagine you got the engine off by now...or ran out of gas. No fold-down rears to get in?

Nope. Won't work. The outside locks are NOT physically connected to the locking device.

You're virtually out of luck until you can get a hold of your spare key (or get one from BMW).

Sidenote: Because BMW's are difficult to get into, whenever I go out of town, I always carry the spare in my pocket.

The one that unlocked my brother's car did it in under a minute. :embarrasm

He locked his with it running too cause he went through the back door to get something and he locked it on accident with his elbow i think.

easiest way to kill the car without having access to it? well if you have a tank of C02 lyin around you could open the valve and stick it in front of the car, but im guessin you dont have a big tank of c02 lyin around.... and I dont know what the compression properties of C02 are and if it'll kill your engine for good

hrm, maybe a sledge hammer?

i dont think the car would die from that...

and i've never had anyone from AAA or any locksmith tell me he COULD break into ANY e36 coupe...the sedans are easier apparently...

Was double locking enabled on your brother's car? Some people who have aftermarket alarms don't have it enabled which sucks cuz your gas tank door won't lock either. My gf's 328i has an aftermarket alarm and doesn't double lock so it's pretty worthless.

Drop the carpet on the trunk where you put the key in. There will be a sliding metal rod which hooks up to an actuator and to the key part. If you move the rod to the left it should trigger the locking system to unlock.

first off sorry to hear this. as stated earlier you probly got in or ran out of gas by now. This happend to me a week ago. all you have to have is patience. so if we are looking at the drivers side window and thinking of it as a square then you will be working on the right side of the window...as it is the side that has most give. anyways I used a wood chisel, obviously wrap it with an old shirt! Wedge it in there and pry the window out a bit so you can get ur hanger in there. i don't have an unlock button and am going to assume you didn't either so just make ur bends according to trying to hook the latch that opens the car door. it took me about 15 to 20 minutes, but i saved like $120 bucs i think. Scratches were minimal, and you can't see them unless I point them out, besides it's my car so I would rather mess it up than someone else. hope this helps someone later on. oh by the way I mean a heavy duty hanger...not one of those cheap white coated ones. :buttrock

Push it through the window not the top but side and hit the window button ;)
only if you lock yourself out with the car running...^_^

I always do that! If I ever leave my car running the window is down. Even if its for 4 seconds to put some movies in the drop box. I'm paranoid like that!

I feel the same way, I've never locked my keys in my car, but my brother does it all the time. He's got a key bolted under his front license plate(They're required here).

Left my car running one day, it started to rain, so I reached in quickly, hit the door lock button by mistake, then hit the window up button without thinking...
As I starred at my windows going up I realized the car was locked, and running, and I didn't have a spare key...oh SH%T! I quickly stuck my hand in the window PRAYING the antipinch function would work! haha Well I had a bit of pain but it went back down just enough for me to stick my arm in and get the door unlocked.

:lol
My friends never noticed, thank god, that would have been super embarrasing if someone was looking!

I have a 97 M3 with a factory alarm and mine does not work like that. I sat in the car and hit arm and the unlock button still worked on the console. Keys were not in the ignition.

pull out fuse #18 for a 95 m3 (fuel pump fuse)....

P.S when I hit the unlock button from inside the doors unlocked. I think my double lock is disabled though.

Also, I remember hearing earlier this year that the M Roadster was the most stolen cars here in San Diego.. crazy, I think second was a honda..
