The S4's handle very well, being AWD, and they have 250hp from a "Bi-turbo" system (2.7L TT). However, with just a chip (goapr.com) they put out like 306hp and 305tq which is pretty sweet. But, similar to bimmers, plan on the repairs being more costly than average. Another thing to check with the S4's is the Timing belt replacement - a must at 70k or less...So maintinence on these cars is key, other than that they're awsome. :D

If an arm and a leg is $600 then i dont know why your owning a BMW...;)
But seriously, $600 for 50 more hp is greater than anything you'll find you could do on a bimmer...Also, it does get more expensive the more things you get, such as a FMIC, Down Pipes, exaust, etc, thats what your thinking of when you say an arm and a leg...Those are the Big Ticket Items ($1000+)
Also keep in mind you eventualy have to replace the turbo's on this bad boy...However with this one and its low miles its nothing to worry about. But after 100k you gotta start thinking about it, and that requires you to completely remove the engine to get to both turbos...:eyecrazy

73k and the turbo's haven't been replaced yet? Has the Y-Boot split yet? Also tossing a chip on a 73k S4 with factory turbo's is like pulling the trigger for those babies to go...
Not to rain down on this thread, but making it aware.
I know. :(
But it's always for the better as once they go, just toss in a couple K04's and you're set!
Well almost.
Bump for the #1 best winter car around!

Toss in Ko4s, agreed! However, if it were only that easy, i think there are several other things you gotta do on top of just adding the turbos to actualy make them work - of course. However, if your gonna pay over $2k to get the job done anyways, mine as well. Chip it Ko4 it and hell you'll have well over 300RWP on an AWD car. :redspot

Yup, that's why I said 'almost'. There is actually a bit more you would need to 'match' with those lovely Ko4's, but none the less it would be a stellar car!

unless you can do the labor yourself... your looking to spend upwards of 6-7k to succesffuly get the k04's working properly...people forget that the whole engine has to be dropped in order to even touch the turbos becuase of the placement..

who has told you that ko3's need to be replaced at 100k? they are actually one of the stronger turbos out there. one of my cars is an 03 jetta 18t with a ko3s on it and the car has 120k and pulls like it has from when i got it brand new from the dealer. timing belt is another story.......good luck with that crap

It will make a huge difference if the car has been run with synthetic oil, the turbos will last much longer. Also, turbo warm up time. If the owner gets in the car, starts it and floors it out of the driveway, thats alot harder on the turbos as well. If the turbos are allowed to warm up before driving the car aggressivly, the stock turbos will last a long time. I almost bought an S4 instead of my 330ci. Its just that you really need to know the vehicle history on a bi-turbo engine. Engine repairs are just to costly on those cars. Great cars though, and a pretty nice price on this one.
