I had a crazy idea for a cool mod that will hopefully be cheap and clean:

I used to have a car with a homelink system, the one that has 3 buttons you can program to open a gate, garage, etc... My e36 328i doesn’t have that and I hate carrying around two openers, one for my community's gate and one for my garage. I was wondering if anyone has done a mod comparable to this.

I had two ideas that I would be able to pull off:

1. I can pick up an an oem homelink kit from an 03 540i. I might be able to cut a hole in the roof in front of the sunroof to fit this piece it, but where would I get power from?

2. I could get a rearview mirror from another manufacturer, but that has the homelink built in. I know the rearview mirror I have now, a stock one, has no power running to it, but the new mirror that I couple pick up would be able to mount after a little fitting and I would have all the homelink buttons in the mirror. SW33T!!! But... there is a temperature gauge built into the mirror in the top right corner, which means that there would be a sitting lcd display in the corner of the mirror. Not a big deal to me if I cannot hook it up.

So the question with both of these solutions is where are the connections I need to hook up (power, anything else I need), and how involved do you think this mod is? This would be really cool to have, and any other suggestions to accomplish the installment of a homelink system with at least two functions for my gate and garage would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,
Jake

The homelink unit that BMW sells is all self contained. It has three wires running to it power, ground and a light signal to turn on the backlight.
