View Full Version : Finally finished my headlights

Redid my headlights with the help of Apexcone.com and kosta. I swapped out my old LEDs for the fiberoptic solution from Apexcone and installed a custom aluminum trim to fit the 5series brackets that houses the 5 series OEM angel eye rings. The DDE kit is very nice in my honest opinon.. i installed a DDE kit in Eddie Farcon's car right after I finished mine and we are both very happy with the kit.

Hey stylin, I see you removed the outer glass of the ellipsoid lens.. how hard was it to do, what was involved, and did it affect the light output at all? The lights look soo much better like that. I love the other changes too, sweet car! :)

a) this looks GREAT - I saw the preview and it looked interesting but it really gives the car a more industrial look!

b) removal of the glass lens in front of the lenses shoudl effec tthe light - ti becomes a pencil beam versus a dispersed light output. Though I suspect the cateye alleviates that somewhat, but on the high beam....hmmmm.

That looks really bright. Looking good! :buttrock

removing the inner lens did not effect my lightbeam.. i acutally like it more without it. But its a minor difference if any.

Without the inner lens u will have a big gap between the spot where the lens is and the acutal projector and lens. That approx 1.5" gap is for the headlight to adjust and move. I covered that distance with the chrome brackets from the 5 series. with the gap u also see around the inner housing of the ellipsoid with looks incomplete as u can image.

you can stick that aluminum piece in but with the inner lens in.. it'll be really blurred anyway.. u probably be barely able to tell what it is. not to mention there has been no more than 2 sets made. :D They were also cut to fit the 5 series chrome brackets exactly.

Like how you got creative on the lights and the DDE's look great, but for some reason the aluminum you put in there with holes, looks kinda cheap. Almost looks like the top of a gas stove.

Do you have a pic with the lowbeams on? I've always wanted to take the glass lowbeam lens off but I'm iffey about the light output. Are you saying the beam pattern is the same?

the aluminum trim is a custom machined piece. The 5 series trim is the chrome brackets that houses the rings. Its the grooved brackets behind each ring from the 5 series. They are all the highbeam brackets as well since the low beam bracket is too thin to cover the gap from the glass lens to the projector.

I wouldnt worry about the light output more than the big gapping holes which is exposed after the lens is removed.

Do you think its wise to leave the ellipsoid there with the gapping hole?

it probably doesnt do a thing for the HID performance or water proofing but it does look funny. like something is missing coz u see the guts of the headlights through the gaps.

i thought about lighting the holes up.. but they sit right behind the metal housing that holds the projector lens. So no can do.. no room...

Another ugly mod for the ugliest 3 Series ever! :D

Ok, everybody, you may as well forfeit all the show competitions next year. This is your winner.

You suck, man. Start modding your Saturn already. He he he.

Hey Phillip how did the WRX do in the snow today? I'm sure you didn't take the bimmer out. My neighbor has a z3 and as I got home I saw him and a few other guys pushing the car up the street and into his garage. It was kinda funny.

The WRX rolled like a champ in the snow. I drove like a granny, but felt safer than I ever could have in the roadster. Two thumbs up on this purchase!
