I would offer $1000 and see what he says. Most likely you'll get a counteroffer, but if he says ok then that's awesome. :)
Have you checked around to see how much its going to be to have it repainted?
Also how much is shipping going to be?
Later,

Painting it would be 500-600 and i am going to go pick it up if i do decide to get it cuz this guy lives in Buffalo, NY. So i save money on shipping.
I sent this mail to him so lets see what he says ;)
"I am willing to pay $1000 in cash and you don't have to ship it i can come personally and pick it up.
I asked around on couple of BMW forums and they said this is fair price. In addition i would have to spend 600 to paint it black. Let me know"

Btw, u may have to pick it up its around 80-90lbs.
You would have to ask 1000 cos any more or u might as well get a new one.

If you go "pick it up" make sure you have the "Hardtop Installation Kit" already installed on your car. Without it you will have nothing to hold it on in the rear. They don't come on convts. unless it was originally purchased with a hardtop.
Installation kit costs around $100 - $120 from dealer. Consists of two brackets and wiring to be mounted on top frame where every thing pivots. Under the inner of the two plastic covers on each side.

I have a hardtop for my E46 and I love it. It takes two people to install it, but it seems to be 45-50lbs. I am sure it weighs much more.
BE CAREFUL with the portable stand. I have had my top nearly fall over twice. The stand requires attention at all times. During the summer I make sure that the stand has something heavy on either side of it so that it doesn't move.
