View Full Version : Please Educate Me On M6
Hi:
I'm guilty of not researching the forum, but maybe I can get some concise answers in this thread. There's an '85 M6 for sale locally and I'm intrigued. Please, if possible, offer some general info for a potential M6 newbie.
Thanks.

Ask the seller when the timing chain and related tensioners were changed, along with the front end and brakes. If you wait until the timing chain breaks (due to worn tensioners) your engine rebuild will be around $10,000, depending on your expertise to do your own repairs you could do it yourself for around $2500. ASK TO SEE RECIEPTS, of all work done during their ownership....and before if that's possible!!
If the car shakes under braking you'll need control arm bushings, and/or front rotors.
Make sure the A/C works, it's not cheap to fix that either.
BEFORE you pay a single penny get a pre-purchase inspection that includes a leak-down test for the engine, especially since this is what makes the M635 and M6 so special in the first place!
With a nice M6 or M635 the driving pleasure is off the scale!
Good luck!!

An '85 would be a Euro M635, so you should also know if it has federalization papers. These cars also had a valve-spring recall.
If you post details on miles, etc. there are probably more things we can do to help (including whether it is a good price or not - PM me at e24mpwr AT hotmail DOT com if you'd rather do it off-line).
I'd also go do some searching on the Roadfly E24 board - some good gold there if you can mine it.
