I am installing the center panel 3 gauge cluster, and the oil temperature sending unit for either the VDO or Autometer set replaces the oil drain plug. Has anyone had problems with replacing the drain plug with the oil temperature sending unit? I know that there is an adapter you can buy for about $100 that lets you install both the temperature and pressure sending units at the oil filter housing. However, is this mainly for convienence and ease of installation, or is there a problem or long term issues associated with just replacing the drain plug with the sender? Thanks.

I have the temp sensor installed on the drain plug and apart from the single occurance of the sensor wire coming off, had no problems as yet.

BTW, I run the Autometer gauge kit and NONE of their adaptors fit the BMWs. I had to get a machine shop to do a new set for me.

Thanks for the tip. I wondered wether the fitings would work on our car because when I ordered the autometer gauges, they never specified for what vehicle.
