View Full Version : Has anyone heard of this strange S52 mod?

Last night I test drove a 99 M coupe. The owner had a piece of paper with directions for "a way to increase horsepower" or something along those lines. The directions explained un-plugging something downstream from the intake, near the HMF and then reconnecting or replugging the wires with a little connection wire he had folded into the piece of paper these directions were typed on.
This is what I remember it saying but I only had a second to look at the directions. It seemed strange and I have never heard of it. The owner hadn't tried it yet, either.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I'd like to get to the bottom of it. Opinions? Thanks
It must be HMF or ASC related, if not complete BS.

it is prbably the ASC delete. you need to keep the ASC plugged in, but remove the throttle body.

Resistor on HFM lead.
Makes engine run rich.
Don't do it.

Ya maybe that or an attempt at advancing timing by tricking the ECU into thinking it is colder...which I'm not sure would work on an M3 (I could do it on my Miata).
Either way, as Stuck said, not a good idea.

Thanks guys, yeah that sounds like what it was describing Stuck. Sounded like a bad idea to me, good thing the owner hadn't done it.
BTW, I am not going to buy the car, its too flipping small and impractical for me, but its been pretty well cared for and has only 44k miles, if any one is looking for an E36/8. Its near Boise and is on Autotrader. $23k.

ya. Good move not buying that car. That is WAAY too expensive. by about $4K at least.
By the way, if you need more room, have you looked for a sedan? Maybe they dont have any more real room, but i think the back two doors makes it at least seem bigger. Easier access too obviously...
Also.. maybe its a stupid question, but whats an "e36/8"?

Why would running richer make more power, I thought leaner = more power but not as safe? On my dyno it shows my car runs rich and the tuner at the dyno shop said if it was tunable and we made it a little leaner I'd pickup a few HP's...

E36/8 is BMWs internal designation for the Z3 coupe body style (the clown shoe), while the z3 roadster is E36/7. The M Z3 coupe is a little too small for me, but M3 coupes fit me like a glove, Im 6'3" 210, and your right the sedans offer more usable space it seems. I believe there are very few stupid questions.

ahhh... got it. Thanks for the clarification.
And yes you did say M coupe as opposed to M3 coupe. My bad.
that being said, I'd retract my statement saying that the $23K price is too high. Certainly it would be too high for an M3, but not necessarily for an M coupe.
