Original Equipment Manufacturer. This is supposed to refer to the manufacturer who made the 'factory' part for the marque.

To extend that, lets say that Mahle makes all of the BMW oil filters. Instead of paying $9.00 for a BMW labelled oil filter, you could pay $6.00 or less for a Mahle labelled unit and it would be the same damn thing, exactly. This is true of a vast number of replaceable items and consumeables on the cars.

A lot of knock-off vendors like to use the phrase "OEM-quality". Try to avoid these types of products, unless it's something that's known to work well, even if they are not "true OEM".

That's what I meant when I said "unless it's something that's known to work well", Matt. :)
I was referring more to the fake clears/tail-light makers, as well as some body-kit manufacturers.
