So I'm driving down Geary (for those from the bay area) and some chick pulls out of a parking lot (Mel's drive in) and I'm driving by and she almost hits me, so I had to brake really hard otherwise she would've hit me. So anyway my brakes made a really strange noise then at the same time I got a malfucntion "Stop! Oil Press. Low" or something like that. I pulled over and my car kinda smelled strange.
The malfunction was there for a split second and it never showed up the rest of the day.
What was all this about?

Have you ever felt how the ABS system works?
Probably it was the ABS which was active.

"I pulled over and my car kinda smelled strange".....
.....uh, was that before or after you opened the door? (hahahaha!!!)
Strange smell possibly from a combination of fried pads and burning rubber....sudden braking could have caused all your oil to suddenly vacate the sensor area resulting in a 'warning', but that would normally only happen if the oil level were low to begin with.
I periodically get indicator lights in the Toyota Sequoia if the brake fluid reservoir is not totally filled and I have to do a 'panic stop'....possibly same type of phenom with the seven and oil level.

Smell? Hot brakes and tires with the smell of Mel's delicious grease?? The sudden stop may have shook your ecu up. Who knows! At least your safe. The worst drivers are around irving/sunset.

haha!
Well in any case, the window was open and the smell was coming from the outside. My oil isn't low at all. The malfunction showed up for a split second, drove half a block, parked the car, turned off the car, and turned back on and the message no longer showed up.

Yeah I felt how the ABS system works, but it def. wasn't the ABS.
It was more of a screeching sound like you hear when a car suddenly brakes hard and crashes into something.

lol, yeah and don't forget Clement st. I was on Irving today as well, I was standing on one block for about 10 min, barely any movement. Stupid drivers making traffic everywhere. It took about 10-15 min to get to 19th ave.

Yes used to get Stop Oil Pressure low too, but under heavy heavy heavy emergency braking. but I didn't get any weird smells, you must have hit the brakes so hard something spilled over somewhere wrong. haha that's all I can guess. Maybe its not even from your car. That happens to me a lot when i hear cars next to me and i think it's my car making the noise. I dont think it could be your brakes, for one fact the 7-series brakes are insanely strong and one hard stop wouldn't even come close to frying them. You have to try very hard to make them smell. Trust me i know, I do a lot of driving in the Rocky Mountains.

That whole 19th ave corridor is a nightmare to drive at peak times.

Yeah tell me about it, that's why I usually use 19th ave. on Sunday's because the other park is closed. Yesterday was an exception though.

I mean I used to get that malfunction too last year, but it was more serious. I had to replace my engine.
Maybe it wasn't my car, but it sure smelled really bad.
The chick who was about to hit me was driving an old old Porsche. Maybe it was her car :dunno

I have learned to never really take the value of a smell, atleast when it is uncertain to come from the car. Granted, I pop the hood, and do a walk around to see if I can smell it again. It is probably just all of the elements that were mentioned (tires, road, etc) along with anything esle in the air.
Glad you car was not damaged again! :redspot

Have you checked your OIL PUMP BOLTS! Perhaps the "noise" you heard weren't the brakes but a bolt hitting the chain!
Here's a post by SE7EN40RTY ( http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7266788&postcount=1 )...he just dropped his oil pan and found multiple bolts laying in the bottom...and the ones remaining were loose. And he also was getting a "LOW OIL PRESSURE" warning.
Loose oil pump bolts is one of the things all e38 owners ( specially the earlier models) owners should check or be aware of.

I believe I had that problem fixed last year when I was getting my engine replaced because I was getting the "Stop, Pil Press. Low" message every day last year. This one showed up after I braked really hard and it made a screeching sound.
After I stopped, the malfunction was gone, never did it show up again.

new engine or rebuilt. If it is new it still might have the Oil pump loose bolts problems? Do not want to scare but cheap insurance to check..

It's not a new engine nor is it rebuilt. I believe the engine is from another 7 series, OEM Used Engine.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->- Intake Cover Gasket<!--[endif]-->
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- PCV Cover<!--[endif]-->
- rear transmission mounts
<!--[endif]-->- rear lower control arm bushings
<!--[endif]-->- car was pulling to the left, fixed that problem
<!--[endif]-->- srs light came on then dimmed, problem resolved
<!--[endif]-->- parking brake did not release all the way, problem resolved
<!--[endif]-->- Had to recharge the A/C
<!--[if !supportLists]-->- power steering reservoir mounting bushings
<!--[endif]-->- replaced the dip stick because it was broken<!--[endif]-->
