I heard that the M50 vanos heads are the same as a 3.0L US S50 heads with differences only in cams. Are there any other differences and will a Vanos M50 head fit a 3.0L S50, are the bores the same for both as well? I searched but can't find a definative answer.

same head. different cams and m50 had larger valves.

Assuming the head is the exact same thing, who cares? Are you planning to do a swap??

Not a swap on my car. A friend of mine misshifted and toasted his head so i'm looking at the M50 heads for a swap since those are easier to come by.

the casting is nearly identical and they are 100% interchangeable. just remind him to use the proper valvetrain in the car.

Jeeeeesus. Why does everybody moneyshift these cars??? It's almost never heard of on the 944 boards.
It's like every day, guaranteed, someone has a thread on the front page with a moneyshift issue...

the money shifts are 100% driver error....it sucks but it happens. As to why it happens on these cars, I guess it's cause more inexperienced people own these cars then they do 944s?
does the 944 use an interference design motor?

I seem to recall they don't from a friend of mine who had one. Are they timing belt too, or am I thinking of MR-2's here?
I'm not really sure why so many people moneyshift these cars either, but I do notice that a lot of people seem to be picking up E36 M3's and they either have very little experience driving a manual car previously, or it's their first manual car. So I think that does contribute to it as well.

They money shift because they either 1. think they are in a race car and they are a race car driver, but they aren't. They get too excited from the adrenaline rush becuase of driving a fast (to them) car and they mis-shift. or 2. They have old and busted transmission/motor mounts and the drivetrain shifted in a turn and they forgot to pay attention to the feel of passing by the gates - but then again you shouldn't be shifting like that whilst in a turn anyways.
I personally find this to be one of the easiest cars to "find your gear," but the problem is that it's so smooth shifting that people just aren't used to it. I shifted poorly once in my first car ('88 325is) when I was 18, on a highway doing about 90+, downshifted to 3'd thinking I had somewhere to go. It revved way past 7k rpm. Fortunately that engine had no problem doing it, and I seem to remember my rough idle went away after that :stickoutt

They are the same casting, they are the same part. All the e36 motors use a timing chain, no belt. the older M20 motor uses a belt.
