There's always a lot of questions that come up in regards to "is this bulletproof" or "is this one armored?"

Here is a genuine one which gives a really good example of what they look like. 750 too.

Freakin' sweet. I've driven in one and except for the extra thick windows you can't tell the difference. They are heavier but not enough to hold back that beautiful V12. I like...

AT LAST! a true example..
Can we sticky these thread? lol
I love messaging guys on Ebay advertising bullet proof glass who simply have the security glass. Which I have. It's break resistant, not bullet proof. Ask them if they'd sit in the drivers seat while I pull the trigger on a .38 to prove it's bullet proof. Usually get no reply. Yeah, I'm that bored ;)

$180,000?? That seems like a lot for a protection car I thought they were more in the range of $140k. I would love to have one just for those windows.

I thought that they were around $130K. Too bad that the pictures don't show "all" of the features. The only things in the pictures that really give it away as a protection model are the "bullet resistant" glass and the lack of a center seating position in the rear. (I don't think that any glass can truly be called "bullet proof".)

You can't see the lack of window switches in the rear, or only two switches on the driver's side.

You also cant' see the lack of a sunroof/moonroof. That's a pretty good clue, as you can't get a 7 series in the use without one in the US, although apparently not in other parts of the world.

And the biggest giveaway... Enter the VIN at http://www.carfax.com and it comes up as "2000 BMW 750IL PROTECTION". Try THAT with any old 7 Series with break resistant windows!

Yeah, I too thought they were around $130ish myself. But I guess once you add tax and everything else- you are probably up to around $150K. The 760li protection model today goes for around $400K if I remember correctly. Maybe that was with every security device that BMW could put in it.

There was different levels of security. From handgun to assualt rifle resistant glass, to gun ports in the windows. Bomb detention, enviromental/chemical protection (air filtration). some cars had more armorment and could roll over a grenade and be fine, some could handle larger stuff.

I read an article that said they're going to start armoring the 5-series too. And it'll all be done outside of Mexico city.

The 740s were, as I recall, about $105-110k and the 750s could hit 130k when new. Few were sold, and most of the US-Spec ones have since been exported. When they did show up on a wholesale level they did not sell for much of a premium.

As a dealer I had 2 of them, both of which were sold wholesale. One is now in Latin America and I think the other ended up in the Middle East, Iraq if I recall. It's been a few years tho. There was a guy on the east coast who was buying every one he could get and sending them to Russia I think.

Easiest way to post one is.. they all have those 17" wheels (Michelin 235-55-17 Runflat MXV4s) and none of them have operational rear windows, look closely at the switch pack on the driver's door.. it's blank where the rear window switches should be. Also, no Moonroofs.
