does the chip really work ?

I want some to add more power to my e36 i was wonderin if anyone has added a chip to there car? Also if headers will have any hp gain, and if i should add a stright pipe. I have a aa tuning intake with the box and a remus muffler on my car. If u know how i can get more power/gain hp without addin turbo/supercharger please let me know.
